Sadness: Andy Whitfield Passed Away

Andy Whitfield, the lead actor in Starz’ Spartacus: Blood And Sand, passed away over the weekend. He was 39.

Whitfield had to leave the show after the first season due to being diagnosed with cancer.

Talk about a slap in the face. He’s this virtually unknown (but hot as hell) Australian actor who finally gets his big break being cast in this (sexy, nudity-prone and very gay-friendly) gladiator series. It debuts to awesome reviews, and he’s on his way to becoming a star. And then…

There’s a million cliches I could type here, but you get the picture. Sad.

  1. Hearing this was so sad… he was supposed to come back in their third season, but he was replaced by another Aussie (
    Liam McIntyre
    ) due to the Cancer.

  2. i have watched the series mentioned and thought andy was both a good actor and very talented. sad to hear about his passing.

  3. People younger than him have died of cancer.
Maybe I’m cynical, but death happens all the time.
    Poor family though.
At least the wife and kids are okay.

    It was non-hodgkinds lymphoma right?

  4. Andy, your star shined briefly but oh so brightly!
May your family find peace and pride in the legacy you left behind.

  5. To me he was Spartacus. The new guy looks a bit like him, but I wonder if the show can survive without its main star. I won’t feel the same. RIP, Andy Whitfield.

  6. Yes I believe it was.  Same thing the actor who plays DEXTER had (can’t recall his name at the moment).  But isn’t it odd how he overcame his cancer while Andy, who was obviously in much better shape physically, succumbed to his.  You just never know.

  7. I’m the same age as him. Was diagnosed with Non Hodgkins lymphoma two years ago when I was 37. Was given two months to live even with treatment. But I survived. Maybe that’s why I feel so sadly about his death.
Cynical? Yeah. That was a very cynical statement you made. Yes, people younger than him have died of cancer and yes, death happens all of the time. Doesn’t mean that it’s any easier to deal with. The finality of death is overwhelming to think about. You’ll never get to see that person again on earth. Never speak to them. Never get to see their talent again. Feel their love.
Right now, I’m sure that the wife and kids would probably tell you that they aren’t ok. They have experienced the ultimate loss.
I feel for all that Andy had to endure. Treatment is hell. No one should ever have to go through that. Ever. But every day, more people than I care to think about do go through it.
Life is a precious gift. No offense, but I hope I never become cynical enough to not care about another person’s death.

  8. This was such sad news to hear. He was such a talented man. An amazing actor, and I was truly hoping he would beat this and return to the role that he played better than anyone ever will. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. His wife claimed in a statement that he died in her arms on the morning of September 11th. So my heart especially goes out to her. It’s hard to lose someone you love, but to have them die in your arms, and see the life leave their body is something she will never be able to forget. It’s a blessing and a curse.. She got to hold him one last time, but at the same time that memory will haunt her forever.

  9. I cried when I learned that he finally succumbed to cancer. He’s too young and oozing with charm and talent. But that’s it, death is a certain event that will come in anyone’s life but sadly, has no certain date. We really would not know when will be our “last breath”.
