RuPaul’s Drag Race: Make Dat Money

So, um, there was a whole lot of crying on last night’s episode of Drag Race, eh? Not even from the contestants or judges! It was mostly just us shedding tears every time LOGO blocked our views with a giant ad for the NewNowNext Awards. How many times do we need to be reminded that James Van Der Beek is hosting a fake, purely masturbational award show?

All jokes aside, this was a huge departure from the prior week’s “Jocks In Frocks” theme. One of the queens broke down in the middle of the challenge and threatened to leave the competition. As if that weren’t depressing enough, there was another meltdown in the middle of the final lip-synch, which had guest judges Mike Ruiz and LaToya Jackson breaking out the tissues. And not in a sexy “I just splooged on myself” sort of way.

But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. The episode began with a mini-challenge, in which the four remaining queens attempted to sell products on the RuVC home shopping network. Yara Sofia dominated with her hilariously off-kilter “pop it on” pitch, and thereby won a whopping ONE MILLION DOLLARS… of RuPaul money.

This would supposedly act as an advantage for the Make Dat Money ball, another fashion-forward runway showdown. Each girl was asked to create three distinct looks–swimsuit body beautiful, cocktail attire after five and evening gown eleganza. On top of that, they had to choreograph a dance to LaToya’s song “Just Wanna Dance”. GASP! We didn’t see that twist coming. Especially since they did the same exact thing at last year’s “Diva Awards”. Oh, whatever! Let’s just get to the rankings…

1. MANILA LUZON (LW – 1, Winner): We’ve said it before, but it bears repeating–Manila Luzon should win this competition. From her big-ass drag queen hair to her “queen of coy” persona, she is the epitome of charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent. We’re always impressed by her ability to channels ol’ school tricks while simultaneously bringing something new to the table.

Also, can we talk about how that crumpled up paper gown looks exactly like something RuPaul would actually wear? In fact, we’re pretty sure we’ve seen her wearing the same thing, except her wig was blond, purple or a similarly flashy color. Ugh! We can’t handle how hard we’re gagging on her eleganza. Sahara Davenport, you are one fucking lucky ladyboy…

2. RAJA (LW – 2): If you’re anything like us, you couldn’t bear waiting up until midnight (on a school night, nonetheless!) to watch this week’s installment of Untucked. We highly recommend checking it out online. Raja shows off a surprisingly sweet side, as her and Manila offer some very kind words to Alexis and Yara backstage. Little did they know, those two bitches were just talking junk about them in the other room…

We were extremely close to calling bullshit on Raja’s “legacy for boys who are teased” spiel. Truthfully, there are times when she comes off as a bit of a bully, but there’s so much more to her than evil grins, eye-rolling and bitchy remarks. Lo and behold, we will never doubt the power of fuck you…

3. YARA SOFIA (LW – 3, Sashay Away): Yes, we’re well aware that Yara Sofia was eliminated on last night’s episode. No, we’re not going to argue that she shouldn’t have been ousted from the competition. When someone tells you to lip-synch for your life, you better work. There’s nothing more to it.

Of course, we’re still in shock that it went down like this. Yara was supposed to be in the top three. At the very least, in the top three that existed in our brains! We came to love her more and more with every new episode, and we can only hope she finds some way to make her dreams come true. Broke bitches need love too.

4. ALEXIS MATEO (LW – 4, Chante, You Stay): Once again, we really don’t mean any disrespect to Alexis Mateo, but she just doesn’t appeal to us as much as the other three queens. We’ve felt this way since the beginning of the season, and it’s telling that our opinion hasn’t changed over time. She’s a sweet girl! Full of surprises! But is she America’s next drag superstar? Not quite.

  1. True story. When you need to lipsych for your life just cut the tears and go to work! I was so uncomfortable w her breakdown. She could’ve won it had she held onto her emotions (cus at the beginning she was really engaging) but once she broke down, it just was pitiful. Oh well, I’m on #teamManila … knowing full well that raja is going to win… :/

  2. I was really hoping for a come from behind victory for Yara. She’s been my fave since the off the wall Amy Winehouse impression.

Raja is probably going to win which is fine with me since it’s about time the most talented contestant actually wins this show, but I’d rather see Manila win tbh.

  3. If you can’t make it through LFYL, and it being your only time there, you need to go, period!! When RuPaul hisses out the word “Life”, the only thing going through your head should be “Werque!!!!!!!”

    Just saying

  4. I liked Alexis and Yara until this episode of Untucked.

Ok, Yara wasn’t as bad, but Alexis! Boo-fucking-hoo! You’ve won THREE main-stage challenges, bitch. So cry me a river about the judges not liking you. Now I don’t like you. She really proved this week how classless and entitled she is. Bitch, your swimsuit and your evening dress made you look like a horny step-auntie and the judges called you out on it. deal.

Manilla should win, but I wouldn’t be upset by Raja winning. Like her or not, she’s a fierce queen and has rocked some of the most creative looks this season. Her tribal look from a few episodes back gets my award for fiercest look of the season. She also proved in this untucked episode that she can be really nice if you don’t give her a reason to be a bitch. I was surprised she kept her cool after all that shade Alexis threw. I would have slayed that bitch.

Manilla is just more of the whole package to me. Her looks are fierce as well, but she’s got a lot more personality than Raja does.

  5. I think that Manila Luzon deserves to win, but Raja will end up winning. The judges all like her too much. But does everyone notice that every main stage outfit Raja has worn has either featured a hood or a hat? She does it every time and it kind of gets old. I like Manila more and it’s been mainly because I felt that Raja had such a cocky attitude. But I’ll check out the untucked episode.

  6. I seem to be the only one rooting for Alexis! She wasn’t my favourite, but she’s grown on me – her references aren’t always relevant to me, but when they hit, they hit. Yara was my favourite for most of the season, sad to see her go.

I was, initially, fond of Raja, but the Heathers bit killed it for me. Such a bitch. Manilla, likewise, fell out of my appreciation. Oh well.

I’d like Alexis to win, I’d be perfectly happy with a Manilla win, but like most, I suspect a Raja win. Unfortunate.

  7. Then the simple solution is don’t read the posts clearly labeled “RuPaul’s Drag Race” or “ANTM”. I’m not a fan of ANTM either so I don’t read them nor post comments there that I don’t like them. Easy breezy.

  8. All the ones remaining have worked hard to get there and deserve to win. The thing that amazes me about the whole show however is that they do all this amazing drag AND make the outfits. It’s like ANTM meets Project Runway but with a drag-twist. Of course based upon the fact that Shangela and Pandora Boxx will be coming to Seattle later this month to perform says that you don’t have to win to hit it big from being on the show. More power to them all and may the best WOMAN win.

  9. Kyle I Am Also Rooting For Alexis Mateo For The Win. She has A Sweet Personality, Impeccable Outfits, And Charisma And Sparkle A Plenty. She IS Very Well Capable of Entertaining Also. Raja Has Never Once Looked Elegant To Me, His Best Outfits Were Carrie From Comedy Night and as Tyra. However he has the ability to bore a room. zzzzzzzzz Manila is a Great Drag Queen, but her Crutch is the asian theme. Whether its Chopsticks, Fans, Kimonos, The Color Yellow (have we all noticed?), and Asian personas. Alexis has delivered in every challenge with variety. The bitch judge is mean to her rather than supportive, we would all feel helpless with that environment. Fact is the judges have favored Raja from the start, I guess it is who you know, and well Manly Raja knows Tyra, Adam Lambert, Mike Ruiz, and Rupaul!!! LAME lexis Surprise Me With A win!!!!!

  10. I dont mind ANY queen complaining about how hard it is but Alexis just got fucking annoying with her “woe is me” bullshit. As others have stated, she’s won before and just use you’re head and keeping doing it you’re way and if that gets you eliminated, oh fucking well. She would loose more credibility if she changed every time and still was in the bottom.

I’ve disliked both Yara and Alexis because as a Hispanic Gay man myself, I’m tired of these queens who can’t speak English well. If Bebe and the rest of the Asian Queens are on point, why is it always MOST of the Latinas that no speak good da english? I also hated how Yara broke down because she was in the bottom and what a shock it was. Stupid Bitch! You had it and you could have taken it away from someone who already almost quit that episode!!!

Raja and Manila are both OK but I’ve never liked them the way I adored Pandora Box but I’m fine with either of them winning over these two Latina Drama Queens!

  11. Johnny you are Ignorant Hispanic Gay Queen, and I say this as a Hispanic, Educated, Gay Man Who is Fluent In Both Languages So This Definitely Cannot Be Racist, Right?. Get Over Yourself Before Everyone Else Gets Over You…..In Case You Are Unaware Accents Are Considered Sexy.
