Ricky Martin’s First Professional Gig Was This Soda Commercial

We know Ricky Martin today as a legend, an icon. He is the King of Latin Pop, a father, and an ardent activist. We’ve also known him as an actor having graced the stage and screen — most recently he lent his voice and moves for Netflix’s Jingle Jangle. But apparently, before all of that happened he was a child model!

While many of us know that from a young age Ricky Martin was in the boy band Menudo, now he’s revealed that in one of his first gigs he was cast in a commercial on a whim. As he revealed on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, his looks were just undeniable even at a young age.

“I was doing a little research on you and found out something pretty interesting,” Fallon told Martin on a recent episode of his show. “Before you were selling albums, you were also selling burgers? Here’s a shot of you from a Burger King commercial that also aired in Puerto Rico.”

Fallon’s team uploaded a wide-eyed, smiley Martin, who was clearly no more than a teen, in a Burger King ad on to the screen to Martin’s laughter.

“You were in an Orange Crush commercial too,” Fallon pressed on. “We found this as well!” The photo also flashed up.

“That was the first time I was in front of a camera” Martin revealed. “My aunt was taking my cousin to an audition and the director saw me because I went with him. Then he goes can you stand in front of the camera? I’m like ‘no, I’m fine.'” The director’s insistence led to Martin getting the spot.

“And your cousin didn’t get it?” Fallon asked the laughing pop star.

“No,” Martin responded. “But it’s ok, it happens! We love each other, it’s all good. He probably forgot about it.”
