Rian Johnson: ‘Knives Out’ Detective Benoit Blanc Is ‘Obviously’ Queer

Rian Johnson has confirmed that a scene in his new movie, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, confirms that his charming southern detective Benoit Blanc, played by Daniel Craig, is indeed queer.

After the film closed the London Film Festival on Sunday, Johnson was asked by the press if a scene in the film that shows Blanc living with another man was meant to show that he is queer.

“Yes, he obviously is,” Johnson said.

In a scene in the new movie, Blanc is seen to be living with another man, played by a “much-loved British actor who is one of the few famous actors who make brief cameo appearances.”

While Johnson avoided the name of the actor who plays Benoit’s live-in love interest, he did say “there’s nobody in the world I can imagine in bringing me more joy for Benoit Blanc to be with.”

Craig later added his agreement, saying “no spoilers: who wouldn’t want to live with that person?”

In Knives Out, Craig played Blanc, a master private detective who was anonymously hired to investigate the death of a wealthy mystery novelist. He then uses his detective skills and thick-as-molasses southern accent to navigate the novelist’s dysfunctional and eclectic family and solve the murder.

In addition to Craig, Glass Onion also stars Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson, and Dave Bautista.

Glass Onion was bought by Netflix after the first Knives Out film was released. The streamer paid $450 million in March 2021 for the rights to two sequels to the hit movie, making it one of the biggest movie deals in streaming history.

The movie will enjoy a limited theatrical run in select Vue and Cineworld cinemas in the UK and around 600 theaters – including AMC, Regal, and Cinemark locations – in the US from November 23-29.

After that, it will debut globally on Netflix on December 23.
