Must Watch: Brand New Gaga

So this could just as well be an aural only entry, but I definitely consider it a Must Watch. Lady Gaga played a brand new song at an Elton John AIDS Fundraiser and it’s actually really good!

I like to hear her get away from the super-pop/dance thing and bare a little more soul. The song is titled You and I and I’m guessing will be included in her next album.

Listen and let me know what you think!

  1. This sounds like actual music. Its a shame she wouldn’t consider using it, I would actually like something Gaga released. Very elton-Johnish.

  2. The song is cool @ least she did something okay for the Elton John Fundraiser.

But WOW is she a tastfull one ya right!

I think Pat Benitar or Joan Jet could have done a better job.

  3. Gaga really is talented beyond all the flair and crazy outfits. People need to realize that…

  4. People are always comparing Gaga to other people and other people to Gaga.

I don’t disagree that this song sounds like something another artist could have done. I can hear Gwen Stefani and Christina Aguilera doing it.

But Gaga did a serviceable job with this, and her performance felt genuine enough. I was favorably impressed.

  5. Blah, I’m so over gaga and her shenanigans. I agree with you JC, but I think she’s so busy trying to be weird or an “icon” that her talent is on the back burner.

  6. I agree with rg. I liked it and bet it will be a big hit. It was almost retro. Maybe even slightly bluesy. And why is that so bad?

  7. I don’t like this. She could shit on a plate and some of you guys would call it a masterpiece.

  8. Pop culture is what it is. It has never been defined by “haute music,” whatever that is.

What appeals to gay culture at any moment has always been an amalgam of persona, art, presence, and presentation. Gaga has done quite a good job at tapping into the pop phenom style pioneered by Cher and raised to greater heights by Madonna. The real question is whether there is much about her that is truly original, but I think the ‘culture’ isn’t ready to weigh in on that just now.

There’s no denying that she has pop appeal.

  9. I would strongly recommend looking up her rendition of her song speechless that she performed live on the Ellen show. Or her unplugged version of paparazzi that she also performed live.

I think people need to realize a few things

    a) She can actually sing, and she does not lip synch
    b) She writes her own music
    c) She creates concepts. When she writes her songs she is thinking about the entire package, (ei The song, the lyrics, the video, the costumes, and the performance. (Hence the idea of performance art)

So yeah a fair amount of what we see is the commodity called Gaga. But, there is a lot that happens that we don’t see. We the viewers are only privy to maybe 5? 10? percent of her appearances. BUt there is a whole world of these gems floating around.

Of course all that aside you can still hate or love her, or not really give a damn either way. BUT, perhaps before spouting off rehashed drivel, maybe you should look her up, watch/read some of her interviews, listen to her less well known music and then make your judgement call.

I for one think there is a lot of talent behind the production. Its just so damn glossy, sometimes it’s hard to see.

  10. It’s quite appropriate that this was at an event given by Elton John because the song seemed very much like him. Not only the song but the performer offering it and her quick and hugely capable talent. They are both successful, marketable, unflinchingly unique, and just plain over the top. LOVE ‘EM!! And love the song.

  11. this song reminds me of a lot of her other work that never got released. look up future love, honest eyes (fooled me again), or let love down.

  12. If you like this check out ‘Again, Again’ from her first album. It’s a bonus track but it’s incredible

  13. I really hate how these “kids” think she is so original and so different. Every generation has one of these “I’m-so-out-of-the-box” artist and people worship them. Ugk, sick of it.

  14. This song was really good and I can see it being released on one of her albums if she changed her music style just a little toward rock/dance.

  15. Nothing original there. It’s been done before and it’s been done better than that.

Gaga is, in many ways, a completely overrated performer. YES, she can sing, but her voice is average at best. Her vision – the hair, the clothes, the behaviour, are such an obvious rip off from Madonna’s and Cher’s earlier years that I cringe every time people start praising her originality. It is a tragedy that the industry chooses to support an unremarkable copycat while truly talented people remain virtually unknown.

  16. I wish people knew what they were talking about. I have seen GaGa live twice and she said herself that she is not original. She takes her look from people and art that she finds inspiring and she has always said that. If only see her videos or hear her on the radio and don’t know anything about her how can you judge her? Her music before she got signed was more like this song. She learned how to make music that will sell and now that she has gotten past the top she can start going back to the type of music she used to do. She is extremely talented and knows every move she makes. Talk all the crap you want, she’s not going anywhere.
