Due to a residency requirement in which prospective parents must spend 18-24 months in Malawi, Madonna won't be taking home Mercy James as soon as she may have planned. At a court hearing, the judge stated, "I think the welfare of Chifundo [African for 'Mercy'] will be better served if she grows within the environment of the culture of Malawi."
While I do feel bad for Mercy, I can't bring myself to feel bad for Madge. I may not know anything about her parenting skills, but it doesn't seem like she'd be bringing her new child into a healthy environment. Beyond the fact that she's a single mother (which isn't a problem at all), she already has three children, an active career and tabloids all over her.
Of course, I may be a little biased given that I imagine Madonna's mothering skills to be shockingly similar to Nadya Ginsburg's "Madonna and Child" parody.
