Lana Del Rey: “Young and Beautiful”

The theme of Lana Del Rey‘s “Young and Beautiful” has been covered by greater artists over the years. “Will you still love me when I’m no longer young and beautiful?” she asks over a lush composition, and you’d like to think that would just make you want to go listen to The Beatles or, even better, someone who needs a little less validation from their romantic partners.

Yet, much like the rest of the body of her work, Lana’s lazy and haunting tone somehow makes this track sound richer than it has any right to sound. It’s sure to be a highlight on the upcoming soundtrack to The Great Gatsby, which also features offerings from Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Sia, Emeli Sandé, André 3000, Gotye, Fergie and Florence + The Machine. A true highlight, indeed.

  1. Lana oh Lana I want to love you, or hate you. Instead, I sometimes loathe and by other turns adore. She’s an image that recalls cultural references by the handful…coalescing in a montage resembling “Death Becomes Her” sans any sense of comedy. A soul singer aware she sold her soul. There is something compelling and deeply irritating… This song is absoulutely in-line with her sound and image. I like it this morning. Looking forward to the Florence + the Machine track and this film.

  2. Good God! Lana is brilliant! The only reason she gets “shit” is because she doesn’t conform her vocals to radio vibes that 14-year old numb-nut girls & boys would understand.
And yes, that goes for you old “pastel mafia” queens that are too old for anything new.
