Lady Gaga Never Dies On The Song of Summer Charts

Song Of Summer-Aug29

There wasn't much debate over which song to save on this week's MANHUNT Daily Song of Summer charts. In a surprise last minute shift, Miley Cyrus jumped ahead and tied with Little Boots for the number five song. Given the tween idol's momentum on the Billboard and iTunes charts right now, we have a slightly uneasy feeling that "Party In The U.S.A." will be carrying us out of the summer months.

That leads me to another question. There's been some debate around the office about when we should definitively declare the official MANHUNT Daily 2009 Song of Summer. The general consensus among my fellow co-workers is that we should end on Labor Day weekend, meaning that this would be the last week of voting. However, I've been wanting to hold out until autumn actually begins. This would make a difference of a few extra weeks, which could make or break the competition. Your thoughts?

And yet another question. After we've collectively decided on a Song of Summer, what becomes of these charts? It seems silly to debate over a "Song of Autumn" or "Song of Winter", but our lives would feel kind of empty without this feature. Should we just move into a generic MANHUNT Daily Top Ten?

If you're just joining us, you'd probably prefer that I answer some questions rather than ask them. So without further ado, let me explain the rules of these ol' charts here. Each week, we present ten songs eligible for the title of Song of Summer. Every reader is allowed to vote for up to three songs, and the five with the highest percentages move on to the following week. These five songs are then joined by a song we save and four songs inspired by your suggestions.

As we come closer to the end of the summer, we'll be favoring recommendations on the few-months-old side of things. We'll also be accepting nominations for songs you think should have a second chance, as indicated by the inclusion of Madonna's "Celebration" (back by popular demand). So let us know what you'd like to see here, and we'll give it some consideration!

Then again, if y'all decide that we should make our final decision on Labor Day, we won't be taking any more suggestions. We'll put this one up to a popular vote…

To see this week's charts and vote, follow the JUMP:

  1. Shakira – She Wolf (LW – 1): This is a first on the charts. For a fourth week in a row, Shakira has held the number one spot. Can she keep it up for a fifth week? It might make a difference in the long run.
  2. Lady Gaga – LoveGame (LW – 2): The pants-free wonder continues to hold her ground at the number two spot, despite harsh competition from… herself? Disco sticks foreva!
  3. Lady Gaga – Paparazzi (LW – 5): After falling a few spots, Gaga jumps back to the number three spot this week. We still can't believe that the crutch dance from this video hasn't become the next "Macarena".
  4. Cascada – Evacuate the Dancefloor (LW – 4): Since making its debut, this tune has been in nothing but fourth place. Though we'd like to imagine that it'd continue to hold onto that spot for eternity, this has to come to an end at some point.
  5. Miley Cyrus – Party in the U.S.A. (LW – 7): Thanks to a little help from some boys on Fire Island (click song name for link), this song has been getting a lot of homo-love and homo-hateration this week. We have to admit that it's our guilty pleasure, and we're kind of sad that it wasn't around earlier this summer.
  6. Little Boots – Remedy (LW – 3): We were surprised that this song jumped to the number three spot last week. Was this week's drop a fluke or can Victoria make a little comeback?
  7. Madonna – Celebration (RETURN): You didn't show Madge any love when she made her debut, but now she's in high demand. Guess the song was more of a grower than a shower?
  8. Jordin Sparks – Battlefield (DEBUT): Youch! We totally shafted Ms. Sparks by waiting so long to add her on the charts. Then again, we're glad we didn't shaft her in a way that would violate her purity ring regulations.
  9. David Guetta f/ Akon – Sexy Bitch (DEBUT): It's no secret that "When Love Takes Over" was the Song of Summer of our hearts. I guess we'll settle for its douchey younger brother.
  10. Pearl Jam – The Fixer (DEBUT): In honor of commenter Erik, we'd like to recognize that gay men listen to more than dance music and R&B. On the other hand, we have a feeling that those gay men don't vote on these charts.

  1. Let’s just accept that Lady GaGa’s LoveGame is the song of the summer and move on. It just won’t go away as hard. I’m serious, let’s just give up. DFoesn’t matter how old or annoying it is, it just stays on the chart. Even if at the last week of votying it comes in last; it wins. The song has been on the cahrt since this whole thing started. Doesn’t that mean ANYTHING?

  2. Let’s keep this chart going on. More like Manhut Weekly Top 10. My candidate for the Song of the summer feature this week is: Gia Bella’s “Back it up” (Dave Aude Radio Edit)

  3. I just voted for Lovegame again. It’s like I WANT to vote for something else, but can’t make my hand do it.

  4. Frankly, I don’t dance unless I’m REALLY drunk, and I don’t particularly care for the dance music in the bars now. Give me a nice waltz, fox trot or jitter bug any time.
I would be fine if this contest went away tomorrow.

  5. I still think “When Love Takes Over” should get a second chance. It got ‘saved’ one week, but Madonna’s “Celebration” is in a second time, why not WLTO?
