Kit Connor’s link-up with an iconic gay director has fans ready for his movie star era

Kit Connor‘s movie star era is imminent!

Don’t get us wrong, the 21-year-old actor’s no stranger to the big screen. He’s been acting since he was eight, and even as a kid he scored work in some pretty major projects, including the Steven Spielberg sci-fi fantasy blockbuster Ready Player One and in the music biopic Rocketman, playing a young Elton John!

But it was the Netflix gay romance series Heartstopper that made him a household name. After three seasons, the beloved story of teens Nick Nelson & Charlie Spring will come to an end with a feature-length film next year, and that’s fitting because it seems to herald the true beginning of Connor’s movie star era…

And that includes a starring role in the next project from one of the most acclaimed gay filmmakers working today!

Per Deadline, Connor will star in A Long Winter, a new drama from Andrew Haigh, the director who gave us All Of Us StrangersWeekend, and many of our favorite Looking episodes (plus Looking: The Movie!).

Though technically unconfirmed, it’s said the film will follow an alcoholic mother Louise who, after a fight with her husband Lester, takes off with her dog on the miles-long walk to her brother’s house. But when a whiteout snowstorm rolls into town, Lester and Louise’s two sons, Mike & Tommy, recruit their neighbors for a search and rescue mission.

Fred Hechinger (The White LotusGladiator II) will reportedly play Mike, and though it seems likely, there’s no word if his brother Tommy will be played by Connor. The only other casting announced so far is Emmy-nominated Reservation Dogs star D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, which will be a mini-reunion for Connor and his Warfare co-star. So, no, A Long Winter doesn’t sound all that gay—and maybe it’s not! But Haigh has a way of bringing a distinctly queer sensibility to his films even when they’re not about explicitly queer characters (see the great 45 Years, or Lean On Pete for example).

And, who knows? Maybe Connor’s to-be-determined character is dating someone else in town, perhaps played by Woon-A-Tai? We certainly wouldn’t complain about watching these two rising heartthrobs couple-up on screen!

There’s no word yet on when we can expect to see A Long Winter, and the in-demand Haigh’s also currently attached to a biopic of writer Norman Mailer and a TV series about Keith Harring, so he’s got a lot on his plate. But these recent casting announcements seem to signal the original drama film is next on deck.

Regardless of its release date, A Long Winter is just one of many films in the pipeline for Kit Connor. There’s the aforementioned Heartstopper Forever, which wrapped production over the summer and is expected to drop some time in 2026 (hopefully sooner than later!).

He also recently filmed a gothic mystery film called One Of Us, leading an ensemble whodunit, of sorts, about a family gathering for a funeral where, strangely, they keep dying off, one by one.

Also in the genre realm is the very intriguing Rapture, the feature directorial debut from Prince F*ggot playwright Jordan Tannahill, which is about a group of Medieval monks fending off a zombie outbreak, where Connor will star opposite fellow hunks Will Poulter and Manu Ríos. Umm, we would like to see it!

And though it hasn’t officially been confirmed, Connor is also in talks to reunite with his Warfare director Alex Garland to lead the film adaptation of the popular role-playing fantasy game Elden Ring alongside Cailee Spaeny & Ben Whishaw, which really seals the deal for us. We’re already seated!
