Janelle Monae is More Interesting than Miss Beyonce.

Here’s Janelle Monae‘s new single “Dance Apocalyptic.”

As you can see, it’s more of her high concept campy pop weirdness and, yet
again, it’s far more palatable than any of the other professionally weird
pop divas making things at the moment.

The first time I heard of Janelle Monae was 2007 when a musician friend
pointed her out to me via e-mail accompanied by the simple message “Miss
Beyonce
had better take note.” Now that we’re six years on, I think he was
pretty spot on with that observation.

Because let’s face facts: Gaga is now and always has been so damned needy
about how sincere her ideas really are, Nikki Minaj is more robot than woman
at this point and Miss Beyonce is so drunk on her own importance that she’s
lost creative control of her brain. Who do we have left that isn’t over 45?

The thing about Janelle Monae’s music is that when she writes her own stuff
the bizarreness she puts out there is usually a mixture of technically
proficient and frantic, genuinely random and interesting and I’m fine with
her. She’s not phoning it in is what I guess I’m saying and that’s good.

  1. Love Janelle! But it already looks like she’s bleaching her skin, so pretty soon I’d bet we can expect the hair to get bleached and straightened too. Et voila! Beyonce’ Deux

  2. Really most of the girls in these music videos, you can only tell that they are black because of their facial features, they are either bleached to hell and back or selected by the record company who prefers mixed/light skinned girls before they reach mainstream success.

It’s not up to them personnally though.

The last dark black woman who was really successful is Grace Jones…after that I can’t really name names!!

By the way I don’t like this song.

  3. Oh actually yes…Missy Elliott !!

Now that was a talented woman…don’t know what she is up to these days.

  4. It’ll be interesting to see (maybe) what “they” do with (or to) the most recent winner of American Idol, whose name already escapes me, who is very talented but not exactly a great beauty, shall I say. And I hope I’m not sounding racist. Even Mary J Blige is trying to look white now.

Oh yeah…Candice Glover. The version of an old song called “You’ve Changed” that she did this last season was, in my opinion, Grammy worthy. Check it out on youtube…or put it up here, DeWitt.

  5. Only time I was ever impressed with Janelle Monae was when she did that collabo with Erykah Badu. I take that back. I mistook her for the lead singer of The Noisettes and couldn’t wait for more. This bubblegum pop type shit has no lasting appeal and it makes it seem like she isn’t truly authentic.

  6. Her last album, The Archandroid, is pure neo-soul brilliance and is a must listen for anyone (seriously, it’s in the top 10 CDs I will easily recommend to anyone regardless of musical tastes or predilections). But she is an artist who likes shaking things up, likes reinventing herself with new sounds and new styles, and I absolutely love her for it. She’s an artist unlike any other out there at the moment and I can’t wait to get her next album.

  7. She is absolutely one of the most beautiful women on the planet… her music is very “out there”… like the female Andre 3000. She gets my vote!!
