Say it ain’t so…
Even though producers and actors have previously confirmed that a sequel to the beloved queer drama Call Me By Your Name was on the way, director Luca Guadagnino has backtracked and implied that the picture has been shelved.
Just last April, Guadagnino confirmed Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer, the stars of the original film, to return for the sequel. A lot can change in a year, especially this last one, and now it seems those plans have fallen through.
“The truth of the matter is, my heart is still there, but I’m working on this movie now,” Guadagnino recently told Deadline from the set of his upcoming film Bones & All. “And I’m hopefully going to do Scarface soon, and I have many projects and so will focus on this side of the Atlantic and the movies I want to make.” He doesn’t say the project has been completely dumped, but it’s clear that it won’t have his full attention any time soon.
The team behind the original film has been dropping like flies over the last few years. James Ivory, who won an Oscar for his screenplay adaptation of the André Aciman book, dropped out of the production. Hammer has left a number of projects after sexual abuse allegations arose against him this past spring. And Chalamet, who many would argue owes CMBYN his career, has begun production on the multiple blockbusters he’s involved in, including the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory prequel.
We’re not giving up hope, but perhaps it best to mourn the loss for now. Okay Alexa, play “Visions of Gideon” by Sufjan Stevens.
