I Don’t Know Much About Advocacy, But My Suits Look Fierce

Barack Obama Cartoon

While I'm still not fully certain where I stand on the Obama administration's treatment of our community, I couldn't help but get a huge "LOL" out of this cartoon by illustrator Michael Derry.

It's a little suspect that all these small bits of good news are immediately following that horrendous Department of Justice brief that compared gay marriage to incest and pedophilia. We got benefits for federal workers! We got passport equality! And we may even be counted on the 2010 US census! But is that enough to make up for those overbearing goons known as Don't Ask Don't Tell and the Defense of Marriage Act?

  1. Ya, I was talkin about this on the other blog. Get your facts about the benefits part. The Benefits are Not health and social security benefits guys. Huh I know. So, He made a Big Deal for nothing. We got fucked with no Dildo? Huh?!? lol
I understand he got a lot of things, but he only needs to do is two things.
    1. Sign a executive order telling the military stop kicking out the gays til we review Dont Ask, Don’t Tell.
    2. Tell Congress to repeal D.O.M.A it was a mistake from the start.

  2. Those are great solutions. The first is, at least. The second, on the other hand, is impossible; the President lacks the authority. And whether or not DADT and DOMA were mistakes, they’re now policy. It takes time (that is to say, more than five months) to make changes like that when the economy is collapsing around us, we’re engaged in an unjust war on an emotional state, and life is generally shit. For an illustration of how difficult reversing DADT or DOMA will be, check out how much Congress fights the President on the whole Gitmo fiasco. He’ll have to come up with completely new policy before he can even hope to oust the old, and the new will be subject to potentially endless argument and revision before it’s adopted. But it will come.
It’s occurred to me lately that if the complaint of people about our President is primarily that he’s been unable to reverse the last 8-20 years of damage done to our national integrity in five goddamned months, then we’re in pretty good shape, and people need to learn how to wait their turn.
