Human Rights Campaign: Corporate Equality Index

Human Rights Campaign

Earlier this month the Human Rights Campaign released its
annual Corporate Equality Index, a ranking of nearly 600 businesses based on
their treatment of GLBT issues.

Do they offer benefits to an employee’s domestic partner? Does their health care plan cover transgender procedures? Do they support diversity in their policies and training? These are some of the questions that Index addresses.

Companies are given a score of 0 – 100, and there were 583 companies rated.  This year 259 companies received a perfect score compared with 195 last year. The index is important because it compels businesses to be more gay-friendly at a time when there are few laws that explicitly support GLBT employees.

Macy’s, Yahoo!, and Walt Disney were just a few companies that got a perfect score.
