Thank god for Ryan Murphy. If you thought that quarantine was going to keep us from getting new shows, you’re mistaken. In addition to the upcoming release of his new Sarah Paulson-led series Ratched, the mega-showrunner is preparing the release of his film adaptation of The Boys In the Band. So strap in.
Releasing on September 30, Boys In the Band was originally a stageplay, first seen off-Broadway in 1968, that Murphy helped quarterback a 2018 Tony-award winning Broadway production of. Now he’s taken that same star cast — Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Matt Bomer, Andrew Rannells, Charlie Carver, Robin de Jesus, Brian Hutchinson, Michael Benjamin Washington, and Tuc Watkins — and turned it into a screenplay for Netflix.
The plot itself revolves around a group of gay men at a birthday party in New York City back in 1968. As you can rightfully assume, the play hinges on their own, intertwined personal dramas. It’s worth noting here that all of the gay roles in the film are played by gay actors.
Directed by Joe Mantello, the screenplay was written by Mart Crowley and Ned Martel, based on Crowley’s stageplay. Murphy is joined by Mantello, Martel, David Stone, and Alexis Martin Woodall as a producer. Crowley passed in March.
Netflix has released a first look of the series — and yes, It was on the set of the Broadway production that Rannells and Watkins began their IRL relationship.
