Gael Garcia Bernal To Star In Marvel’s Halloween Special

Halloween has come and gone for another year, but Marvel still has creepiness on its mind, looking to conjure up a spooky Disney+ special for next year. Details are still scarce, but according to The Wrap, we do at least know who will star: Gael Garcia Bernal.

Though the special itself has yet to confirm a title, the site has heard that the Marvel team may well be bringing the Werewolf By Night idea to screens.

First created by Gerry Conway and Mike Ploog based on concepts by Stan Lee and Roy Thomas, the original version of the character first appeared in a 1972 issue of Marvel Spotlight before he scored his own ongoing Werewolf By Night series that ran for 43 issues before its end in 1977.

And the lyncathrope – who can transform even without a full moon and retains his personality as a werewolf – was re-invented as Jake Gomez, just last year in Werewolf By Night (Vol. 3) #1, created by Taboo, Benjamin Jackendoff and Scot Eaton, Gomez, a member of the Hopi Native American tribe whose family has been cursed with lycanthropy, comes in conflict with a nefarious pharmaceutical company exploiting members of the tribe. That would seem to be the potential focus for the special (with some adjustments), though Marvel is, of course, saying nothing just yet. Shooting will kick off early next year.

And this isn’t even the first holiday special in the works from the Marvel gang – James Gunn is shooting a Christmas-themed Guardians Of The Galaxy special for next year’s festive season, ahead of Vol. 3‘s arrival in 2023.
