The best description we can come up with for Emeli Sandé is “Alicia Keys meets Adele“. Based on what we’ve heard, she keeps one foot firmly planted in R&B and soul, with the other lodged deep within the melodramatic, power pop, “torch song” sound that made the latter artist so damn famous.
For the UK folk, we realize that we’re horribly late to writing about Ms. Sandé, and we make the same apology to any US readers who have a heightened awareness of music outside of our borders. As for the rest of you? This might be the first time you hear Emeli Sandé. You might love her. You might hate her. But you should, at the very least, give her a chance.

I hope the US is not too late to jump on the Emeli bandwagon. She won the Brit Award Critics’ Choice this year. Previous winners were some newcomers by the names of Adele, Florence and The Machine and Jessie J.
