Yesterday Coldplay received seven Grammy nominations, and today they were sued by Joe Satriani who claims the melody to their hit single "Viva La Vida" was a rip off of his 2004 song "If I Could Fly."
The similarity of the melody is striking, but I'm usually skeptical about claims of copyright infringement. Because of the sheer number of songs, and the simple fact that there are a limited number of combinations of chord progressions, this is bound to happen from time to time. I don't think Coldplay will lose any money in court.
