Aural Only: Utada

Hikaru Utada, Billboard, US Club Play, This Is The One, Dirty Desire, Digital Dog, during my 9 to 5, thinking six and nine, dance charts, Japanese-American, US market

With three English studio albums behind her, Utada hasn't had much luck crossing over to the US market. She's achieved massive success in Japan, but her single greatest achievement in America was reaching number one on Billboard's US Club Play charts with her 2004 single "Devil Inside".

Although her latest release This Is The One has essentially tanked on the charts, she may have some luck topping the dance charts again with her latest single "Dirty Desire". The lyrics are some of the sleaziest we've ever heard coming from her–"During my 9 to 5, I'm thinking six and nine"–but she pulls them off without sounding like a total slut-bag. Plus, the remixes are so good that they make me want to behave like a total slut-bag! Not that it's much of a stretch…

Here's the Digital Dog remix, which is much better than the original.

  1. her song ‘first love’ is perfect, but it’s in japanese with a bit of english and u americans dont really listen to foreign music, same as britons. sorry for u.

  2. “Devil Inside” is pure, repetitive drivel and should be expunged from music history. I am astounded it reached number one on Billboard’s US Club Play chart. Just shows what I know about what is considered “good”.
Her latest song, which you posted here, is so much better, showing that she’s taken some time since then to better her English, and hired a lyrics writer

  3. thank you for the kingdom hearts references. both of the songs were amazing and i dont know why i never heard them outside the games. probably trademark or something. but yeah. i love her she is amazing.

  4. I thought I was the only one who Loved Utada outside of my Kingdom Hearts games. I own her Album “Exodus” which is pretty good. But, her songs from Kingdom hearts 1 and 2(both the English and Japanese versions) are still my faves

  5. ive been a utada fan for quite some time. haha and this is coming from a 6foot7 masculine football player. But the thing is when she crossed over into america (Exodus 04) everyone was still labeling her as J-pop which never caught on here. Now i like the music that she does but she is slowly tryin to do the Nelly Furtado from nice and cool to just what appeals to people. which in music is sex. True she will always have a soft spot in our hearts from Kingdom Hearts. but those songs are from albums as well. just English Dubs. the Kingdom hears2 one Called “Passion” and the the first Kingom hearts one a PlanitB remix of “Hikari”. I just dont want her to change to meet these so called american standards.

  6. Ya gotta give the girl credit for perseverence. Despite being one of the #1 female artists in Japan, she’s determined to try he heart out here, too. She writes her own lyrics, in English or Japanese, so kudos there, too. ‘Devil Inside’ was okay, but her live version of it at her last concert *destroyed* the album version. Off this album, Dirty Desire was an okay track, but there are some better ones. She’s most at home in slow grooves, so track down “This One” or “Merry Chritmas Mr. Lawrence” from this same album (This Is The One)

  7. DUDE I FUCKING LOVE UTADA!!!
give me some of her over gaga any day dewie!
my fav right now is her sakura drops remix!

  8. I love Utada, but something that I actually love about her is not only that her songs are great, musically and lyrically, but also the great tone of her voice, and in this new song, she miss all that. The music is boring and repetitive (unless you are more into a Dumb-blond-Ladygaga-bitch thing, the lyrics are naive, but most of all, and what surprise me the most, is her voice: there’s no actual “singing” in this “song”!! That shocks me, because her voice is tremendously marvelous!!So in my opinion, no kuddos for her yet. I gotta heasr the rest of the disc to make a better judgement, but in the meanwhile, this song sucks!! It sounds too Gaga for me!!

  9. Whoa I just died seeing Utada here.
I hope this song does well (on the dance charts at least).
Utada Hikaru is my favorite singer and I think I’m the one who recommended Dirty Desire for the charts, but maybe I just planned on doing it. Either way she’s amazing. I just saw her live in Chicago and she was amazing. Her Japanese music is better than her English stuff overall but I still recommend her new English album to everyone. Especially the songs On And On, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence – FYI, and Apple and Cinnamon.
    Check her out!

  10. @Christopher King/ Utada was born in the NYC and she doesn’t even have an accent. There’s nothing to do to “better” her English.
Also, now and then she makes all music herself. Never hired a lyrics writer.

  11. I was at her concert at the NYC days ago.
She was very different looking. Her live performance was not perfect (she never was) but that’s the part of her quality that her voice so delicate and sensitive.
I hope she can make a more progress here in the states, but most of fan base was very limited; asians, and some of black or latino girls.

  12. I actually liked the original better than this remix…but for all the people that want to hear her Kingdom Hearts songs, all the English ones are at end of her latest English album, “This is the One”. Her Japanese albums are totally different, and I think Exodus was closer to that than this album, but I still love her. She’s the first one that got me back into music after the late 90’s kinda made me lose faith in it…heard “Simple and Clean” and was a fan ever since. I’d say my favorites on her latest album are “Me Muero”, “This One (Crying Like a Child)”, this song, and “FYI (Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence)”
