Aural Only: Robyn

The Scissor Sisters aren’t the only ones taking their dance music to a darker realm. Swedish pop star Robyn debuted the first official single from her new mini-album Body Talk Part 1, and it’s a far cry from her upbeat hype track “Fembot”. With an extreme emphasis on the cry.

“Dancing On My Own” captures the desperate moment of longing for someone you can’t have, exploring a similar theme to previous releases “Be Mine” and “With Every Heartbeat”. Robyn has a talent for catapulting this concept beyond pathetic to a completely relatable level. And somehow in the end, you still want to dance to it. Give this one a few listens before you write it off. It’s definitely a grower!

  1. It’s great, but it kinda hurts. At least with Every Heartbeat there was something rather hopeful about it, this is just painful.

  2. all gay men who combine ‘ugh’ and ‘dyke’ deserve all the discrimination that comes their way, and then some. tom, you are one stupid faggot.

  3. I like the song, and I’m with you, TW…it’s a song about hurting, but I see a sliver of hope in the fact that though she sees the one she wants kissing someone else, she’s still dancing, even if it is by herself. Gotta have strength to be able to do that. And the music is really good too!

  4. Robyn is amazing, although I am disappointed you didn’t mention “Dance Hall Queen,” which was done with Diplo and “None of Them,” which was done with Röyksopp. Both are awesome songs to dance to. Robyn and Röyksopp collaborated on another song on Röyksopp’s album, Junior, which is even better than their newer collab.
