Aural Only: Rihanna

We’ve all seen music videos where singers complain about the media. Madonna‘s done it. Britney‘s done it. Hell, even fucking Ashlee Simpson‘s done it. The concept is overplayed, but it’s going to be around as long as there are celebrities and people desperate enough to report every time Hugh Jackman‘s dog takes a shit.

Case in point? Rihanna‘s latest clip for “S&M”. The red-headed pop diva lashes out against various gossip sources in the most disturbing way possible, resulting in a range of emotions for the viewer. At one point, you’ll feel kind of bad for her. At another point, you’ll hate her for including a cameo by a certain unmentionable “journalist”. And then you’ll just throw your hands in the air, because every outfit makes you feel like one of those gays who says “fierce” and “fabulous” out loud. Or maybe that’s just us.

At the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter what you think, because this song is going to become huge. Rihanna never disappoints when she’s laying down her alien vocals on a thumping dance beat, and this is certainly no exception to the rule. Final verdict? We like it, like it… C’MON!

  1. Very hot record/song, but kind of a shocking video from someone who got beat up by her boyfriend not so long ago.

  2. This song is my personal favorite from her album. It’s got a great beat to dance and Rihanna’s vocals don’t induce cringing on this track. For some reason I see this song being great with drag queens…something about the beginning of the song…

  3. AWESOME VIDEO! The song is so catchy too. Will definitely get lots of criticism for the content. But I really love what she was trying to do with the media. MUCH better than her last video “What’s My Name”, that one was a snoozer.

  4. Yeah – great vid! I’m glad she just went for it… I feel soeone like Britney would have copped out on the S&M stuff. 😉

Ive loved this song since the album came out, and now I hope itll get more play time at the bars!!

  5. Another example of Rhianna being a well-produced HIT machine! (and that’s a good thing)

While people are raving on and on about their favorite divas and new music this year, Rhianna backs up all the talk with action. Just about everything she has released for 5 years now has been a HUGE multi-platinum seller and has been all over the radio.

Britney and Lady Gaga have some serious competition if they hope to get past Rhianna at the top of the charts

  6. I guess my hatred for Rihanna has dimmed, cause I didn’t hate the song. I must be going on the back swing of my Rihanna like or hate.

  7. I think she’s making a statement and at the same time making her mark as one of the world’s biggest pop stars. This might her 10th #1 on Billboard and that would put her in 4th place (shared with Janet Jackson) amongst female singers with more #1 hits.

  8. S&M is about control, which is what most victims of domestic violence don’t have. She didn’t ask or willingly participate when Chris Brown assaulted her. She did have total control during this video. Very different.

  9. Actually liked the song. Video was a bit over the top, but in today’s music video scene – it’s pretty much the norm to be OTP.

  10. God she’s annoying. She wishes tabloids talked about her that much and there really isn’t a reason for her to lash out against them.

Her annoying fans are saying this is an “artistic statement” a la Madonna’s “Erotica”. This barely touches that. Madonna used “Erotica” as a lash out against the media and the public because they called her a whore (think the way Emma Stone became the biggest slut in Easy A because she was labeled one). Nobody ever called Rihanna a “slut” and she was never portrayed negatively in the media, so she really has no reason to do all that against the media and general public.

But ya know. Deep throating a banana is SO artistic.

  11. @Zane You obviously have not been reading around much. Since her “Good Girl Gone Bad” album, people have been calling her a slut. During the “Rated R” era she was called a flop. So it’s just her responding to the criticism.

Again, love the video! The song is pretty good, but before the video, I hated the song. So mission accomplished Rihanna!

  12. somehow i doubt this song will become a ‘hit’. first of all, its called S&M. That means basically no air play. Second of all, it covers things about S&M, which will also contribute to my first point.

Oh and its kind of annoying. OH NA NA COME ON. how many times does it say that in there? 80?

To the person who said she looks good for being beaten up by her boyfriend not too long ago, well take a hint at what the song is about. Its a hint towards her thinking violence is a normal thing. She had been beaten up by him before the public knew about it.
