Aural Only: Ricky Martin

After announcing his status as a “fortunate homosexual man”, it was only a matter of time before Ricky Martin unleashed his “comeback” single. We just didn’t realize it’d sound anything like this. The singer made a wise move to target the adult contemporary demographic, opting for a breezy mid-tempo number with a little assistance from Joss Stone. It brings us great pride to present you with “The Best Thing About Me Is You”.

Say what you want about the cheesy lyrics–which are significantly more tolerable in the Spanish version with Natalia Jiménez–but at least this isn’t some half-assed attempt to sound like Lady Gaga or Ke$ha. Kudos to Ricky for realizing he doesn’t need to break back into the current mainstream pop scene. Honestly, he’ll do much better appealing to the grown-up fans who used to sing “Livin La Vida Loca” into their hairbrushes.

  1. I like the Spanish version with Natalia Jimenez, she’s such a great vocal talent. Good choice for a comeback for Ricky. He’s having an interview broadcast tonight in Latin TV in the US at 7:00 p.m. EST.

  2. It’s a good effort and he’s careefully selecting what his next steps are after making very public his coming out. I did prefer the Spanish version maybe because he’s always been more of a Latin pop star and he seems more comfortable singing in his language.

  3. joss is crazy great. this song so sucks it’s scary. who the hell wrote the lyrics??? wow
shake something, coming out shoulda givin you a little more bon-bon baby.
    nursing home, background musak. pity

  4. Sounds like something Michael Buble’ would have passed on. Ricky is nice to look at, but he’s made mostly horrible records for American audiences, and this is no exception.

  5. Love Ricky more today, now that he is finally honest with himself. I like the song and can feel myself driving around with the windows down and the wind blowing through the car…Light and easy.

  6. Flyboy63 – what do you mean “finally honest with himself” What a load of crap, the guy has been sucking cock for years, Christ mate please don’t repeat those those stupid comments – anyone that does hasn’t a mind of their own.

  7. Seems this is an unfortunate time in the music industry to be a pretty boy song interpreter, as opposed to someone with something to say but at least Ricky Martin knows what his strengths are. It would come off even sillier if he suddenly decided to write something edgy and personal or worse even, have someone else write something ‘edgy’ and ‘personal’ for him. This track pretty much rides on his beautiful smile but at least his vocal isn’t drowned in autotune.

  8. Nice background music.. I wonder if he knows that he has a whole new group of critics he has to play with? Can we say brutal? Yea I’m afraid we can..

  9. I like them both equally. Martin isd an incredibly talented artist. For those of you who continue to post about his sex life….get over it…let it go…comment on his talent or don’t comment at all.

  10. Just because you come out as gay, it does not mean you need to enter the world of adult contemporary crap. Did his twins help write this? “I am allergic to tragedy” REALLY?! Threw up in my mouth. I miss my sexy Ricky Martin Shaking what his mamma gave him. Not this “Look I am gay so I have to sound like Jack Johnson!”

  11. I like it! It’s much better than any of that latin dance pop crap he made. This is more relaxed. Could easily listen to this repeatedly

  12. To me, Ricky is one of the sexiest men alive and even though the song is just “okay” compared to some of his other work, I’ll probably pick it up to keep the collection complete.

  13. There’s plenty of room for artists in the mainstream pop/dance scene. No need to abandon the scene that made you who you are in America. And the generation that grew up in that scene (I’m one of them) still like that music, so won’t listen to this unless maybe it’s remixed into a dance track.

  14. Just wrapped up seeing his interview on Oprah….He’s an incredible man, wish him all the best.

  15. The spanish version sounds like a typical light pop song. But the english version is a tooootal let down. It sounds like a really bad Jason Mraz song. :[
