Aural Only: Nelly Furtado

Nowadays, it seems like any artist who’s recorded two or three albums can throw together a collection of greatest hits. It makes sense, right? While the fans anxiously await new material, you just throw together a bunch of your old material and slap on a few new tracks. It’s a win-win situation for everyone involved. Well, mostly it’s just a win for whoever makes money off of your music.

Nelly Furtado is the latest singer to jump on the greatest hits bandwagon, which is questionable considering that she’s only had four top ten hits on the US charts. Then again, the world doesn’t revolve around us! Most of Furtado’s singles have been much more successful in Canada, and she’s pulled out additional hits on an international level. That’s not even counting any of her Spanish singles, as well as her collaborations with Juanes and James Morrison.

Plus, her latest single “Night Is Young” still has a chance to rock the charts! While it’s not necessarily her best song, it’s definitely upbeat enough to keep the public’s attention. What do you think? Does this track deserve a place on her greatest hits album next to “Promiscuous” and “I’m Like A Bird”?

  1. Love Nelly Furtado. The CD with “Promisculous” is one of my faves. She’s also done solo vocal work with Timbaland on some of his CDs that’s great. And anyway, “Greatest Hits” collections by many artists are released every year for holiday shoppers to buy as gifts. So it’s not strange that Nelly would put out such a collection at this time. This new song is nothing special, though. Maybe a dance remix could improve it. No doubt, there will be one or many.

  2. It’s a nice song actually. Indeed, there isn’t anything outstanding about it, but it’s enjoyable, at least.

  3. Great Song!

Her greatest hits will have 4 new songs on it, which is rare. Usually there are only 2 new songs. Plus there will be a deluxe greatest hits edition with all of her latin remixes.

She may have only had 4 top 10 hits on billboard, but she had had 8 top 20 hits. She has had almost 10 top 10 hits in Canada, and is one of the best selling Latin artists anywhere.

Not her best, but a really good song!

  4. Keith is right about her hits. Although some of the best songs in Nelly’s career were huge outside America, her Greatest Hits is one of those albums that any fan must get this fall.

  5. I am so glad she is back.

I really like this song. Not her strongest vocals, but the beat is good and all around is a great song. It will fit perfect on her best of package.
I can’t wait until her brand new album drops in 2011.

    Great song! Welcome back Nelly!

  6. Whoa Nelly! That’s a great song. I also downloaded the Manhattan Clique Remix and I can see this going to the top of the dance charts on Billboard very soon.

  7. Nelly Furtado is one of my favorite singers of all time! She was the first person I ever saw in concert, I have all of her albums and have secured so many secret songs of hers!
I like Night is Young, but I really prefer Girlfriend In This City, which will be one of the new tracks on her “Greatest Hits” album.

Dewitt, you better put her on the Top Ten!!

  8. GREAT SONG!

    WHERE IS THE VIDEO?

Suggestion: I think videos influence the way people vote, so maybe songs should not be put in the top 10 into their official video is out. Example this song, the Black Eyed Peas new one, Kesha’s new one, etc. That way every song in the top 10 has a video to go along with the song.

    Just an idea.

  9. I agree with Chris.

This song is getting killed on the top 10. You should have waited for a video to come out for it before putting it up against songs with vids.

Plus, with the polls not working right for the 1st few days, i think it should be saved.

It is such a good song.
