Aural Only: MPHO

Need something to wash out your ears after listening to that terrible LFO single? Well, let us point you in the direction of MPHO, whose single "Box N Locks" has been on repeat since we first heard it. The song samples the '80s tune "Echo Beach" by Martha and the Muffins and makes her sound a bit like the UK's answer to Santigold. Hopefully her debut album Pop Art is successful enough to get a US release!

Oh, and some chick named Madonna also released a preview of her new single "Celebrate".

  1. Song is OK.
    Don’t count on a U.S. release though.
She doesn’t have “the look”, and her style of music isn’t really what’s hot right now.

  2. Firstly, Marc (with the “C”), she has a rather interesting look that could very well work state-side. There is no style of music that’s really “in” right now to be honest. I think we are definitely in a time (and I love this) where many genres seem to be out there and flourishing to their own degree. I hate when we have those eras where we are inundated with one style of music to fit some formula of success (i.e. BSB, Britney days).
With that written, in regards to the song? It is actually very reminiscent of Santo/tigold but pales in comparison. Santo is first and foremost a writer/producer and you can hear that expertise in her music. (I have also seen her perform live and she is absolutely amazing and also pays very close attention to instrumentation and not just digital machinations). This UK girl seems to lack that all and the music seems flat and repetitive.

  3. Now, that Kate Bush cover? That’s a different story. I think that’s the direction she should take her voice! That I love! There is actually talent there!

  4. Pink and Amy Winehouse are your counter arguments…Hahahaha!
    PUH-LEASE!
Pink hasn’t had a number one single in how many years. Yes, she is a wonderful artist, but she will never achieve the success she had until she goes back to the more Hip-Hop oriented style she had when she first began.
And Amy Winehouse has that soulful voice everyone loves. Too bad she went all cracked out though.
No there isn’t any certain style that dominates right now, but you can tell a hit when you hear it no matter the genre, and this isn’t one of them.

  5. Marc, I don’t mean to be a smarty-pants… but Pink’s ONLY number one single came out a little less than a year ago. I’m referring to the US specifically, but that was her most successful single and topped the charts in AT LEAST nine countries. Her album’s also selling pretty well given the current state of the industry! Just sayin’.
