Aural Only: Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson is back from the dead! Or at least he has a new single out. Sure, he may have recorded it before he passed away in June 2009, but I’d prefer to imagine a zombie version of the “Gloved One” rocking out in the studio. It’d be like life imitating art… provided his hunger for human flesh didn’t outweigh his desire to perform the “Thriller” routine.

In any case, the King of Pop will be releasing his eleventh studio album on December 14, a posthumous collection simply entitled Michael. The tracks have been described as “newly completed recordings”, which means my undead pop star theory may not be entirely off base. Check out the lead single “Breaking News”, and let us know what you think.

  1. Of course I totally love anything MJ does or did, but this is pretty much like everything else he did after “Thriller.” Sounds like it could have been done during the “HIStory” period maybe. The mix has that “Stranger In Moscow” feel. Disappointing to anyone who was hoping for a new sound and style that might have been representative of work he had done with will.i.am. Still, I’m looking forward to the new CD in December and will certainly buy it.

  2. Hmmm…taken on it’s own…it’s a very average track. To me, the music doesn’t sound very up to date (sounds kind of early 2000s), the vocals are nice, but nothing remarkable.

It’s decent enough music, and should sell on it’s own merits, but it won’t. It will probably sell in huge numbers because of the dead celebrity factor, which is sad.

  3. Not a bad song. It is funny that people are saying it is not Michael singing. What is a Michael song without some controversy?

  4. His own kids and his own mom say that it’s not him singing, that’s hardly “people” spreading rumors. But I guess whatever, if you like it, buy it, who cares…

  5. I’m not feeling the song; it’s not finished. He’s done it before better: “Another Part of Me” which was an excellent commentary on his celebrity without hitting you between the eyes. I saw Anita Baker cover it back in 1989 and was astounded by the song even more so. It is sad he had to leave us and not finish his work.

  6. It doesn’t sound like MJ; it sounds like somebody else trying to sound like him. The timbre and vibrato are a giveaway.
