Aural Only: Ke$ha

Mark down this day in the history books–I don’t hate Ke$ha anymore. That isn’t to say that I like her, but I don’t have the time or energy to scoff every time someone mentions her name. She’s a necessary evil within this disposable pop music scene, and loathing her is about as played out as holding a grudge against Katy Perry for “I Kissed A Girl”.

More importantly, I have to give the girl props for at least casually supporting the gay community. Her video for the “It Gets Better” project may not have been the most inspiring of the bunch, but she’s still made it known that she won’t stand for the bullying of LGBT teens.

Then there’s her new single “We R Who We R”, which has been said to be a message for those aforementioned teenagers. “I wanted to inspire people,” she explained in an interview. “It’s a celebration of any sort of quirks or eccentricities.” Hmm, what do you think of that explanation? Will this track provide inspiration for those who struggle with their identity?

  1. If this woman is the spokesperson for her generation, they’re in a lot more trouble than they know! While I applaud the sentiment of this song, it is hard not to be offended by the “quality” of her “art” and her self-fashioned image as “skank” as a role model.

  2. People recommended this song why? It’s nothing extraordinary. Not really even that interesting. Just the same mediocre sounds that has the masses pretty much brainwashed these days…

  3. Do all her songs sound the same or what? Same producers behind her songs and Kathy Perry’s which sounds just like her. At least Dr Luke and Benny Blanco know how to milk their success. Good thing most people don’t have memories, as long as there’s a beat and some synths on top of it everyone just keep on dancing on the same songs. I wish Kesha would just vanish already.

  4. Don’t know what the big deal is since her songs never last more than 2 weeks on this site’s chart. It is another predictable pop song from Ke$ha and her auto tuned voice.

  5. I don’t think she’s a revolution in music, but she’s worked hard to get where she is, and maybe if some of you listen to her other songs, you’ll see she’s an excellent songwriter. Our community is so fixated on Lady Gaga this generation that nobody wants breathing room for another successful female pop artist. Yes I’m a gay man who doesn’t like Gaga ZOMG.

  6. Excellent song writer, I don’t know, But her songs are fun to listen to when you are out.. I got to say I am a fan..

  7. this new song sucks just as much as her other ones. She’s utterly untalented and not even hot enough to make up for it. At least she doesnt look as sticky and off putting as usual.

  8. team @keshasuxx until i RIP. i love this girl. i wasn’t a fan of ‘tik tok,’ but after i listened to the deluxe version of ‘animal’ i was hooked. first, she’s worked her butt of behind the scenes in the music industry to get where she is. second, you can’t put a pop songwriter on the same level as pop ‘artists’ who sing whatever song sheet is stuck in front of them. third, as gay men who fight for the right to be and express who they are apologetically, i’m a bit surprised that you guys are hating on her expression of her style. i mean, yes, a lot of her songs do have the same theme / sound, but look at taylor swift. she’s a brilliant songwriter, but let’s be honest: boo boo is singing the same three songs over and over and over again. but no one complains because it fits into the ‘southern girl next door to disney box.’

  9. Hmm.

As a gay man, I’m highly judgmental.

    And Ke$ha….

…Only thing I liked out of her was that one song about freaks and a hole in the wall or something. With the hot boston guys dancing.

    Yea.

    Probably realize why.

  10. Back of guys – she is great and so is this song.

How many artists can say that every single from their debut album went to the top 8 on billboard’s hot 100? Very few!!!!!!!

    Tik Tok
    Blah Blah Blah
    My Love is Your Drug
    Take it Off

4 songs of her debut album got #8 or better, and if you include her song with Flo Rida, that is 5 songs in the top 8.

She must be doing something right.

For all you haters, I dare you to listen to “Boots and Boys” by Kesha. Tell me if you still hate her after listening to that song!

  11. You said it Chris!!!!

What’s with all the Kesha hating? Cuz she is skanky and a girl? Her music is awesome and I love this song.

Like Chris said, what female artist in the last 3 years has actually had this much success placing 4 songs in the top 10, other than Gaga? Rihanna failed with her last album, as did Kelly Clarkson. Kylie has 0 airplay in North America and never will. Pink and Madonna have been on an extended leave of absence. Radio refuses to play Kelly Rowland and Kelis. Christina bombed with a great album and may never recover. Britney is crazy. Janet where have you been? Cyndi, you gave us a BLUES album!?!?! The world needs someone like Kesha – a consistant hit-maker.

Stop hating on Katy Perry as well. Her new album rocks. Listen to “Firework” as a possible entry on the top 10 – it is her next single and vid.

For all u kesha haters, take chris’ advice and listen to Boot and Boys, as well as Kiss N Tell.

  12. For a song that is about acceptance and being different, I see a lot of hate. Ke$ha might not the be the most talented of the bunch, but her music is liked by a lot of people and she already got four Top Ten hits in the US from her debut album. I recommended a song by Axwell called “Nothing but love 4 U”. Check out the video and the single. It has a powerful message underneath all the dance beats.

  13. lol – i agree – animal is a great song and will be remixed on her “cannibal album.”

guys should also listen to “blind”, “kiss n tell” and “boots and boys.”

listen to her music guys – don’t let the haters persuade you.

  14. @the people saying “she’s awesome, she has 5 songs in the top 8 from one release”. Who gives a fuck? You can make anyone a star, it’s not a matter of how good you are, it’s a matter of how many idiotic fools you can get on your side. Just look back at that William Hung fellow, he was fucking awful, but people everywhere in the US loved him for his cover, they even gave him a fucking record deal. That should be proof enough that america doesn’t know shit about good music. Pop music is the enemy, so stop feeding the beast. FUCK!

also, don’t say “calm down dude, it’s just music” or anything of the like, because it’s not music that she’s producing, it’s mindless fucking drivel.

  15. A wise man once said:

“Kesha looks like she’d be sticky if I were to touch her.”

Her music isn’t anything special but we haven’t had ‘special’ since the 1900s so…what’s new really?

  16. Can you please stop supporting this talentless hack? She’s a disgrace to other pop stars, let alone the music industry.

  17. Wait, wait!’She’s a disgrace to other pop stars’?Really?Oh I’m sorry if she hasnt staged a public breakdown in her driveway for the press(Brit),or vascillated between being pussy porn and a diva(Xtina),or been a plastic doll with bad taste and a shrill voice(Rhianna),or had incomprhensible songs that are rarely heard again(Beyonce,oh wait, any of the above….and I love B most of the time),or written a gay song and then shows gay-basher sentimentalities(Katy)…They are all manufactured wanabee’s…its ridiculous to judge.

  18. well said Ray

Kesha is great – she writes, sings, produces her own music. you may not like it, but does it mean you have to hate her for it???
Angelrat – you are ignorant and way out of line.

I have never liked The Beatles or Led Zeppelin or Elvis – does that mean I should hate them?

  19. Kesha’s team quickly wrote and produced this out of their autotune-shitmusic-factory soon after hearing Lady GaGa’s new album and song would be called “Born This Way.”
“We R Who We R?” Go figure.

  20. Count me among the Kesha non-fans. I don’t think her singing is worth mentioning, though to her credit, she doesn’t try and belt songs out- her voice just doesn’t have the power or the range.

This song in particular isn’t horrible, it’s okay. But all her songs seem to be about partying and dancing..every song I’ve heard at least. She’ll end up being a singer/producer of musical fast food if she never tries anything different than the same old “let’s Party” shtick.

  21. Both ke$ha and Katy don’t have much substance, but their songs are fun to listen to, but that’s where it ends. They won’t have much longevity. “We R Who We R” is a great message, and will be crazy popular no doubt, along with some songs off Katy Perry’s new album. Although I can’t say I’m a fan of Katy Perry because her album was so bad, there’s about 5 huge singles on that album. Same with Ke$ha’s Animal. There were at least 2 more top 10 singles off her debut. Only pop stars I don’t care for are Rihanna and Christina.

I also can’t say I’m a pop fan, but I’ll listen to their songs every now and then. Be it in my car or in the club or even at home, usually if I’m throwing a party.

But who cares, really? Don’t just diss her out and then be caught listening to Rihanna, Taio Cruz or even Usher for that matter. Even Gaga comes off as annoying and pretentious at times.
