Aural Only: Janet Jackson

Janet Jackson, Nothing, official single cover, Why Did I Get Married Too?

Pop icon Janet Jackson has just unveiled the music video for her new single "Nothing", a song recorded exclusively for the Why Did I Get Married Too? soundtrack. Though it's practically a lackluster clone of the better ballads in her repertoire, the singer has once again proven that she's back to being the Janet we've all come to love. Or at least something like it.

You were digging Janet's last release "Make Me", so I'm curious to hear what you think of this one. Should it make an appearance on next week's edition of the Weekly Top Ten? The choice is in your hands!

  1. Close your eyes as you listen to this, and it’s almost Michael. I don’t think Janet has ever used the breathiness, vibrato, falsetto, and child-like quality of her own voice to sound more like her infinitely more-talented and tragically deceased brother. I like this song and recording, but oh, how it makes me miss Michael so much more.

  2. I like this. It’s a decent track from my favorite female artist. Following the All For You album, Janet seemed to have lost her way musically. Sure, the songs from the last few albums were decent enough, but they weren’t HER. Yeah. Nothing may sound like a weaker version of Let’s Wait Awhile or Again. But at least it’s a sign she might be working her way back to the Janet who made me fall in love with her music in the mid-80s. If only she’d team up with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis for an album again.

  3. I’ve never been a major fan of Janet’s ballads – I prefer her other tracks. And yes, this sounds like an even more washed out version of some of her past hits. But I totally agree with Jason – I was glad to hear this, because it sounds like she’s getting back to where she first began. I still remember listening to Rhythm Nation on my walkman continuously for weeks. I’d love if she’d return to that type of music.

  4. I heard she WAS teaming up with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis again…
as for the song, Janet can do no wrong in my book, so yes. A grade.

  5. Love it. I am so glad that our favs from the last 10 to 20 yrs are going back to what made them great. Don’t let these producers change you.

  6. I don’t hear Michael in her voice at all. Considering the movie I think she could’ve came a bit harder.

  7. i dont hear Michael in her voice at all either!! lol I hear janet and only Janet. Does that mean in her other ballads you can hear him? She sounds like she always has to me. and to the guy who said Janet changed—no, music changed. Music took on a more R&B and then techno sound, so she adapted and she did too. The thing I dont get is…is an artist doesnt change, people say they need to get with the times, if they DO change, people say they need to stick to what they do best. I assume that means Madonna too, because its funny to me to hear a 50+ yr old white lady doing songs with hip hop beats. i thought janet’s FEEDBACK was a hot hot song

  8. and, if youve seen the movie, you might like the song even more. The lyrics are directly from what happens in the movie. Not to mention that Janet ius AWESOME in the movie. Homegirl loses her shit and goes bat shit crazy in it lol
