Aural Only: Gabriella Cilmi

Gabriella Cilmi, On A Mission, music, song, music video

There are certain songs that just unleash your inner drag queen. You know exactly the ones I'm talking about. You turn them on when no one else is looking, prancing around your bedroom and singing into a hairbrush. Mirrors are often involved. I have a long list of songs that fall into this category–notably Irene Cara's "Fame"–and the list has now become one song longer.

If you're not already acquainted with her, please extend a warm welcome to Australian pop singer Gabriella Cilmi. Her new song "On A Mission" may be the gayest thing I've ever heard in a long time, and I'm absolutely obsessed with it. I've already watched the video ten times this morning. It's so deliciously campy and retro.

What do you think of this song? In the words of Dwayne "The Rock/Tooth Fairy" Johnson, "It doesn't matter what you think of it!" Whether you like it or not, I'll definitely be honoring commenter Andrew's request to add this to the Weekly Top Ten.

  1. It’s like Kylie, Beyonce and Anastacia wrapped in one. And then they went to Eurovision. But in a good way!

  2. im not very excited about this song… In other hand i think a good DJ could make and amaizing remix of this song…. anyone knows a remix of this??

  3. Jimm- “aieight”? that word went out when “In Living Color” went off the air. (“Take it from me, it’s aieight to be…In Living Color”), and that is the ONLY place I ever heard it used repeatedly. At least the “Men On…” series was decent.
And rafa- I am assuming English isn’t your first language, so I won’t bother to list what needs to be fixed with what you typed. Keep in mind, however, if you are going to send a post to a blog in English , and the blog originates in America, you really ought to be able to type at least as well as most of the bloggers… oops, I just realized what I typed, and must apologize. You CAN type as well as most of the bloggers- and better than many for whom English IS a first language.

  4. Randy – you clearly don’t watch American Idol, even though it is one of the most popular shows on television, or you would recognize Jimm’s quote as something Randy Jackson says all the time. So it didn’t “go out” with In Living Color and perhaps you should stop being so preachy and holier-than-thou with your comments when you clearly don’t always inhabit the high ground. While I find proper grammar important, arrogance and obnoxiousness are very impolite. And lay off those who don’t speak English as a first language. How many languages do you (or most other Americans) make an effort to speak/write?

  5. Randy, please keep in mind that capitalizing words to indicate italics is not appropriate English grammar, nor is placing a hyphen immediately after a word (“bloggers- “) with a space after it.
In other words, you are a failure at life. Goodbye.
