Aural Only: Donna Summer

At this point in time, where does the gay community stand with Donna Summer? Some have shunned after rumors began to spread about her anti-gay comments, in which she allegedly stated that the AIDS epidemic was God’s punishment for homosexuality. Others have defended her to the end, insisting that the situation was misinterpreted.

Whatever the case may be, she still remains a legend in the world of disco, and the sixty-one year-old diva continues to make music to this day. In fact, she just dropped her brand new single “To Paris With Love”, equipped with remixes by Mendy and Wawa. What do you guys think? Could this be another number one dance hit?

  1. the song is not so good
she won’t have another hit, because ppl would expect something as good as her old stuff and if she records something similar, ppl would say it sounds like a rip off of her old hits and a desperate attempt to get into spotlight.

it’s upsetting if she said something like that about gays, but she said she didn’t. though who knows, she is a devout catholic as far as i know and that is never a good thing.

  2. Ok. I tried all three versions. They’re all AWFUL!! What were they thinking letting her have studio time.

  3. Somehow, I didn’t want to like it, but somehow I do. Vocally, it doesn’t sound anything like Donna Summer, maybe more like Kylie, which was probably the objective in the first place. The producer has done all kinds of electronic tricks with Donna’s voice, apparently, to take 40 years off it, and he has succeeded. The original and the remixes are interesting, melodically catchy, and very current-sounding. With radio and club play, it could revive Donna’s disco-queen status.

  4. I’m one of the Donna Summer supporters. I’ve always liked her music, and I do happen to think the situation was misinterpreted, not to mention it happened nearly 30 YEARS AGO.

As for the song…it’s smooth and laid-back, but lacks a certain energy. It’d be good for smooth background music in a hip bar, but isn’t really dancefloor suited the way a lot of the tracks from her last album ‘Crayons’ were.

  5. Indeed, she is a legend of the world of disco. who could forget ” I Feel Love” and other disco songs which dominated discotheques in the 70’s. Just give her the benefit of the doubt.

  6. What I wanna know is, are the background singers singing “Louis, Louis, Louis Vuiton”? And will this show up in one of their ads any minute?

  7. The alleged comments were from 1983!! Give it a rest, Manhunt. Old news. Long since forgotten.. Who cares? With that said…Donna is a legend. Kudos to her for continiuing to put out great music… She can still sing better than most singers out there today. Ever seen her in concert?

  8. The song is very good, i like the original version a lot. People compare her vocal to Kylie on this track, but it’s more a return to the Moroder feel of her first four albums 1975-76-77(i know, i’m old). Still talking about this rumour…….come on guys.

  9. Lets get some facts stright here.
Firstly Donna is a Born Again Christian and not Catholic.
Secondly, Donna has always denied saying anything, and nobody has ever come up with a sound byte or video even though it was alleged she said it during one of her concerts!
She also succesfully sued the New York Times, for an undisclosed amount for mis-quoting her.
She then gave this undisclosed amount to various AIDS charities, whch she has been working with for several decades.
Finally, the song is very good. Her daughter works for Louis Vuiton as modle. Donna was asked to perform at one of their fashion shows, and she wrote this song as a result.
