Aural Only: Britney Spears

Has anyone else noticed the recent animosity between Britney Spears and Lady Gaga fans? They’re basically at war with one another, with each group going out of their way to sling mud and tear down the opposition. These people make it seem like you can’t possibly enjoy both “Born This Way” and “Hold It Against Me”, when there’s really no reason to compare them in the first place.

Simply put, Gaga is a pop artist, and one might even call her a musician. She has some sort of vision, and she exercises a varying degree of control over its execution. You don’t have to like her to acknowledge that this is true.

At this point in her career, Britney is merely a pop star, a distinctive voice we’ve grown to love or hate. Some might even call her an icon of sorts. Her “art” is mostly defined by her producers and collaborators. And this isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Take for instance, her second single from the Femme Fatale campaign “Till The World Ends”. The track was produced by Dr. Luke and Max Martin, and written by everyone’s favorite trash-pop urchin Ke$ha. As you might suspect, this isn’t anything revolutionary or groundbreaking. It’s a song about dancing. Like every other damn song on the radio.

And then there’s the chorus. With one simple stuttering of “Whoa-uh-uh-uh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh”, we’re confronted by something so utterly irresistible, mindless and addictive. It’s the type of song that has potential to convert those who don’t worship at the altar of Godney, much like “Toxic” or “Slave 4 U”.

We can only hope Gaga’s “little monsters” will be able to look beyond their bias, recognizing that the two pop entities can coexist in peace. Will this be the song that makes things right? Moreover, can we please not compare this to “Born This Way” in any way, shape or form? Let’s just embrace it for what it is… So, um, in your opinion, what is it?

  1. So … you’re trying to be fair, but, you’re calling Gaga “artist” and Britney “Manufacturated” …. Not good.

  2. I think there’s no reason to compare them… One of them is going for their same old past, and the other one is a wanna be alien. The only thing I know I can compare is brother cant dance as well anymore and gaga dances like a 14 yo at a birthday party! They both have that going for them 😉

  3. This song definitely got Kesha written all over it.

Totally hated on first listen going like ‘wtf is this shit’
    Same on second listen.
And only on 3rd listen i saw a gem in it.
The “Whoa-uh-uh-uh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh” is not the chorus. It’s the 1st chorus. It’s a build up to the second, more powerful, anthemic chorus “See the sunlight… etc” Good club song and omg, it’s so catchy, you can’t stop singing “Whoa-uh-uh-uh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh”.

And yes, the Britney and Gaga teams are definitely going against one another:
Britney tops Billboard a week after release of her single breaking all the records on her way and GaGa decides to accomplish the same or better, but releasing her song for less than a full week.
Britney team sees GaGa getting a number one after 3 days on iTunes and thinks ‘we can pull that out too’.

At this time it is really hard to say whether the song will sell enough to get to Billboard no.1, but if it does, this will be totally hilarious. Not sure what GaGa team will come up with in response. They are definitely releasing another single before her album drops too.

However, it will be very tragic for Britney if she debuts at no.2 right behind GaGa’s current no.1
This would probably mean the war is over for now.

Can’t wait for news reports :))))

and btw, Dewitt, she is an icon and she also got a lot more control over her career than people think. and you forgot to mention that gaga is making her career by selling herself as a total weirdo.

  4. I completely agree with you. I like pop music alltogether. I don’t see why someone can’t like Britney, Lady Gaga, AND Christina Aguilera. Same thing with my R&B.

But I completely agree with your opinions of both of them; Lady Gaga has a hand in the production, writing, art direction, video direction, etc. Britney is a product of everyone around her and does what is handed to her. But I still love her.

Just like their singles. I like them both. Britney’s is a fun song about a pick-up line. Lady Gaga’s is a dance anthem with a positive message.

But no reason we can’t enjoy them both. And seems like their next singles will be great too.

  5. “So … you’re trying to be fair, but, you’re calling Gaga “artist” and Britney “Manufacturated” …. Not good.”

I also think this is an unfair description.
Britney writes some of her songs too. Just cos gaga plays piano and can come up with some very simple tune and then give it to mighty producers to make some proper shit out of it, doesn’t make her much more than an artist than Britney.

Britney is involved in her career. She makes a lot of decisions in every aspect of her career. At the moment, she just hides behind producers, but that’s not cos she is totally manages, it’s just her escape from the paparazzi.

  6. The war will however continue when gaga releases her album in May.
Currently Britney hold the record for the fastest selling album by a female singer with 1.3+ million copies in 1 week for her Oops I did it again album.
That would be quite a record for gaga to break.
Well, if Taylor Swift managed 1 million, i’m sure GaGa can get pretty close to that number as well.
    Lets see.

  7. I think thats a great way to compare brit and gaga….pop star to pop artist….everything gaga does is alot of her own images, from main ideas to minor details alot of it comes from her mind…and creates art. Im not saying britney doesnt have some input to her performances and videos….but a majority of it is influence in some way by others. I personally love them both and enjoy what they both have to offer because they are entertaining and talented in their own ways.

Now to the SONG….lol I love how catchy it is and love the beat…deff going to be up on the charts by born this way

  8. Remember, Gaga wasnt all that weird when she released Just Dance and Poker Face – 2 of her biggest selling singles. Lovegame she became a little more interesting, another huge single.

It wasnt until Paparazzi and Telephone (2 huge hits as well that she became what you call weird).

People love her music! Plain and simple. I saw her live in Toronto last night. She was in Paris the day before releasing a song called Government Hooker at a fashion show, she did the run way, borded a plane, flew from paris to toronto, and sang in front of 24,000 people for 2 hours 100% live!

It is true some peeps may be fascinated by her, but her music speaks for itself. Radio plays her; people buy her singles; itunes is almost shut down by people wanting to buy her songs. 3 weeks at #1 on Billboard Hot 100. I mean that has nothing to do with being weird. It has to do with making good music that the fans wanna listen to.

As for Britney, I do like this song alot! I like it more than Hold It Against Me, but I mean c’mon, don’t you think this far along in your career you could try something a little different? She has 0 control of anything. She is handled 110%.

  9. Gaga is just as manufactured as Britney. She attempted to break into the business as a singer/songwriter & when the industry said no, she manufactured a persona. That’s not her, it’s not who she is, it’s merely a gimmick and she’s used the LGBTQ community to sustain that success. It’s a shame no one wants to talk about that aspect of her “artistry.”

  10. I don’t understand the ‘war’ between fans either… I personally am a HUGE fan of both… Does nobody realize that they actually recorded a song together? Stop the fighting…. and just enjoy it!

  11. Once again, the argument of Britney being a product of the producers and the people around her is just so pointless and such a backhanded compliment.

She’s been in the game for 12 years now. You don’t become and remain at the top of the game this long without substance of your own.

If you ever read into what producers and other musicians say about working with Britney, you will realize that they ALWAYS say she’s the nicest and sweetest person ever AND a TRUE professional who knows what works for her.

It’s so easy to just throw a shade at Britney because she’s relatively quiet and keeps to herself. She simply doesn’t care what you think of her. But it’s also so easy to call Lady Gaga an ‘artist’ and ‘innovator’ because she’s just always out there and wear crazy things. She works with producers and writers just as everyone else in the industry.

People really need to look deeper than the surface. At the end of the day, what matters the most is music for the both of them. NOTHING separates them musically, they are both REALLY good at making pop music.

  12. Ah, I totally agree. I think most pop stars/artists are a symptom of what people want at any particular moment. Of course, Gaga is really good at maximizing that effect. She filled a niche that needed to be filled, of course, she broke into that niche by being a bit more typical with her first album. She’s incredibly logical, which is respectable, but it’s hard to believe that it’s not a rouse.

  13. @Jay
really have to agree with Jay on Britney being a true profession.
She knows her worth and won’t let anyone manage her if it goes against her own views.
She knows she can replace any of her managers & producers in a blink of an eye, but there won’t be another Britney.
You probably need to be a fan to know her well. And her fans know what a wonderful person she is. That’s why she has probably the most loyal fan base of all artists.

  14. I loved this song. I played it for my classmates in college today and they couldn’t resist dancing to it or singing the “who oh oh oh oh oh oh” part after the song ended, they all loved it ^^

  15. I love all three of them, as well as Ke$ha, Katy Perry, P!nk, and Rihanna. That being said, GaGa’s my favorite. I’m a proud little monster. This song isn’t as good as Hold It Against Me, but it sounds ok. WAY too much autotune, and it sounds like Britney’s take on Ke$ha, go figure.

  16. Britney doesn’t have control of her career, let alone her life. She’s manufactured. Makes the same type of music for each album. It’s nice to see her more relaxed and not crazy like 3 years ago, but she’s just a pop artist. Gaga is a performer and an artist, weird or not. The song is very good, but let’s see what Gaga will bring as a second single.

  17. Gaga is still just getting started, will she still have this same momentum/impact on her 4th or 5th album? As for Britney I really, really hope she brings it this album and turns out some good live performances she used to be able to dance her ass off.

  18. @JPH

so Britney is not a performer?
    makes sense… cough.
besides, each single one of her albums is different.

  19. @Nex – you are sooooooooooo OFF!

Britney cannot sing – she has never sung live once – never – why is that? And dont say it is because she dances. So Gaga and Madonna and Janet and they still sing live.

Britney can no longer dance – hence why her videos went to animation and then stupid (radar) and now edit out and fade to black whenever there is a dance number.

She doesnt write any music, she may contribute a word here or there, but that is it.

She does not produce and of her music and she cannot play any instrument.

All of these facts lead to the conclusion that is manufactured pop. No more, no less.

She Hold it Against Me debuted at number 1, but it stayed there for 1 week and then fell faster than the stock market. Now it sits at #13 and that is after the video is now out. Compare that to the success of Born This Way, Firework, Raise Your Glass, We R Who W R, Only Girl in the World. It does not even stand up to any of these songs.

I think peeps would love to see her take a risk. Write her own stuff and show us once and for all that she can actually sing!

  20. Hmmm. why is gaga an artist? I think she works with artists. I mean, artists can collaborate, but (and correct me if I’m wrong) she’s never created something from nothing without a collaborator doing the work.

  21. I like it HIAM better, but it’s still alright.
Personally, I think there’s no comparison between Gaga and Britney. Their careers are completely different.

  22. The 2nd chorus – “See the sunlight/We ain’t stopping” – has got such an irresistible hook that I cannot dislike the song.

I like Britney because she’s not annoying as Gaga is. I’m so sick of Gaga’s pretentiousness. I feel for Brit because of what happened to her – she will never be the same again.

I really admire Gaga for standing up for the gay community, but that’s where it ends. Her Grammy get-up gave me high blood pressure, her meat dress was disgusting. She’s a bigger attention whore than Ke$ha. She acts like she’s so original yet her music is just as generic and manufactured as any other pop star.

But what no one realizes is that Robyn is the one who should be triumphant of both. She does what Lady Gaga is trying to reach for, and what Britney is somewhat capable of. She makes dance and club music for the brokenhearted, and has lyrics we all can relate to. She is also an incredible performer with minimal equipment, aka, no gimmicky get-ups!

  23. @Nathan i think it’s you who is totally offfffffffff

but i won’t bother explaining. you just dont know britney or her career well enough to make those type of comments.

you belong to the hater category. let it go. be happy.

  24. Horrible!

Honestly this chic has no talent. All she does is release music that is forgotten about in a week. Her last 6 songs have been duds – I mean sure womanizer, circus, 3, hold it against me have been popular in the 1st week, but then they crash and burn. Same with her last 2 albums. A real artist that people love does not sizzle as fast. Same thing will happen with this song.

Britney and others who claim ur for real and an icon or whatever, prove me and ur other cynics wrong and sing a song that u wrote by yourself LIVE!!! If you can sing 1 song, and only 1 song, completely live, i will withdraw all my comments.

Bring back the Britney of Toxic and I’m a Slave 4 u

  25. @ kirk

Yet the ‘Britney’ of Toxic and Slave 4 U; neither song was written by Britney and were never performed ‘live’. She has nothing to prove to you or anyone else at this point.

If you like it, great. Enjoy it. If you don’t, move on to Gaga (I assumed you already had). But you’re honestly grasping at straws when you make a point about her having no talent based on how her songs crash and burn. You just come across as desperate and childish.

I love this song, great verses, infectious chorus. Between this and Hold It Against Me I can’t decide which one I like more.

  26. @jay

why can’t she sing live? that is my question to you.

how do we even know that is her voice?

even though “slave” and “toxic” were not written by her or performed live, at least they were fresh and new.

this new song is a remix of rador and if u seek amy. it is nothing new or risky.

if it weren’t for the ahahahaha part, it would downright horrible.

  27. @nathan

she can sing live. and we know it’s her voice and we know it very well, cos we heard her sing live. there are tons of videos on youtube with her singing live. she also plays piano.

it’s just most of her recent upbeat songs are pretty impossible to sing. the ones like toxic and womanizer and this latest song. she records them in the studio, but singing it live is a different thing. you can blame her producers for making her music like that, you can blame her for not choosing music that she could sing live, but the fact is that she can sing live. here’s some totally random video from youtube:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X45RnIHpqNs

she doesn’t have the most powerful voice. but her fans adore the voice she has, cos it’s so unique, so britney. she is at her best when she sings ballads like From The Bottom of My Broken Heart <<< that's britney "un-retouched" voice.

End of discussion, seriously. Stop saying crap about her without knowing shit.

  28. to be able to sing her upbeat songs she’d have to sing in a different key/tempo.

e.g. like this slower version of ‘stronger’.
pretty awesome i’d say. i dunno why she doesn’t do the same with her other upbeat songs, maybe she is too shy, too afraid ppl won’t like it that way. she’s a very humble person.

    Stronger (live):

  29. Britney is performing this month from San Francisco on GMA, I think it’s the 29th? I hope she kills it.

  30. Looks like Gaga beats Britney again. This new song really didn’t perform that well after being released.

Here is the story right from Billboard:

With Lady Gaga locked in at No. 1 for a fourth week and only one song entering the top 10, Britney Spears makes the Billboard Hot 100’s splashiest headlines, debuting at No. 20 with “Till the World Ends.”

Although she snaps a string of two consecutive No. 1 debuts (“3” and “Hold It Against Me”), a feat only she and Mariah Carey have managed, Spears logs the fifth-highest-debuting of her 25 Hot 100 entries. “World,” the second single from “Femme Fatale,” due March 29, arrives with 117,000 downloads sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan, after three days of availability (Gaga’s Born This Way sold 440,000 after just three days). (“Hold,” the set’s lead track, launched at No. 1 seven weeks ago with 411,000 downloads after six days on sale).

“World,” co-written by Ke$ha, concurrently starts at No. 68 on Radio Songs with 16.8 million out-of-the-box audience impressions on 145 stations, according to Nielsen BDS.

Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” banks a fourth week — its entire chart life — atop the Hot 100. The song is the first to begin at No. 1 and remain on top for as many as four frames since Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” (also four) in 1998.

  31. Nathan you keep proving that you are one of those dumb gaga fans.

you just can’t compare the performance of “plagiarize this way” vs “till the world ends”.

gaga was promoting the song for months before the release. it started with a scandal of being a rip off of madonna’s express yourself which immediately gave it a huge buzz. she also performed it on the music’s biggest nights – the grammys. it’s also her 1st single in a very long time.

britney didn’t do any promotion for the song. she only tweeted ‘the cat is out of the bag’ after the song suddenly leaked. she then went on a radio show at god knows what time (7:30 am). It’s the second single from her album. her previous one was released 7 weeks before that.

if you can’t see the difference, then i’d say you aren’t really smart.

  32. now, however, if you compare ‘plagiarize this way’ vs ‘hold it against me’, that’d be more fair. and i’d say britney comes out on top here.

she didn’t do absolutely any promotion for the song. only a few tweets several days before the release and she still managed to achieve almost as good result as gaga who did all she could to promote the song.

  33. i also think there shouldn’t be any comparison in the first place, cos gaga’s song is a total fraud. if it wasn’t madonna who wrote that song that’d definitely be a lawsuit. madonna just wouldn’t bother with a lawsuit, cos she doesn’t need extra buzz, that’d only give gaga the buzz. it’s a rip off and gaga hasn’t even apologized or acknowledged it. she did however a smart stunt by going to the grammys in that stupid egg. and she did that to avoid question about ‘express yourself’ on the red carpet.

  34. I have to agree with Nathan here and disagree with Nex, even though I am a fan of both artists.

Gaga has the momentum and is slowly but surely taking over top female. Unfortunately Britney is fizzling out. It’s a shame, I really loved Blackout songs and Toxic and Slave and Womanizer, but these 2 new songs are the same old. I loved them when I 1st heard them, but now I am so bored with them.

Gaga although reminiscent of Express Yourself is in alot of respects different. I have not got bored of it at all. Yes there was promotion for it, but even if there wasnt, i believe it still would have been huge.

To say that Britney didnt promote the songs is quite an exagerration. She has been leaking snippets of all of her songs for a long time now. First we had 15 second clips; then 30 second clips, etc. We also had interview after interview with her producers. Before the video hit, we had 14 20 second clips of it and photos. So there has been alot of promotion for both songs.

The difference is this: Gaga’s music sounds more fresh, while Britney is stuck doing the same old. The sales alone speak for themselves. Gaga #1 for 4 weeks, Britney has tumbled to like #23 and she was only #1 for a week. I think people want Britney to take a risk like she did on Blackout. She needs to do an album like Madonna’s American Life or Hard Candy – be edgier, take a risk. Even if it doesnt sell alot of copies, it will make u grow as an artist. I love Britney, but it is the same old stuff. This new song sounds just like Radar which was a horrible song! Take a risk B! Even if it fails, u will still come back.

Kudos for Gaga for making interesting and fun music. I hated Alejandro, but I love this song. If you really want to see how amazing her new album sounds, youtube “Government Hooker” at the Paris Fashion Show.

  35. Ryan, even though i disagree on most of what u said, i have to correct u a bit.
Britney released all of those snippets and crap to promote the video which was like weeks after the song debuted at no.1 on billboard. she didnt do promo for the song and still got about the same results as gaga even though it stayed there for a week.
gaga is fresh and new and no one can deny that. but that’s how it works in the industry. in a few years gaga will become old and boring and people will turn to some fresh new artist and only true fans will stay.
i really like gaga, and i love born this way, but i still think she owes an apology to the Queen, or at least an acknowledgment. she did after all say that she wrote the song in 10 minutes, so she could come with an excuse that she didn’t realize she was “expressing herself” a bit too hard.

  36. i am an avid reader of billboard.com and rollingstone.com. Britney had snippets of both her 2 songs on here well before their release.

she also had versions of her 1st one on youtube and on her official website with the comment”if you like this, wait to you hear my version.” That my friend is promotion.

I just wish Britney would try something out of the box. Blackout was one of my fave albums but she was too messed up to promote it. I am hoping that this album will be good due to the delay in release date. I just dont think these 2 1st releases are of the quality I was hoping for.

  37. ehm, no. there was no snippet for hiam at all. and that line u quoted was from last wednesday when her second single leaked and then she released it on thursday. there was no snippet for till the world ends at all. there were tons of snippets for her other album tracks but not for her 2 singles.
    billboard, twitter + official website.

  38. This not nearly as good as Lady Gaga’s Born this way,..britney is no talent,…..(Lawlz troll)

  39. Wow….surprisingly….I don’t hate it (not a Britney fan at all). It’s catchy (though totally over-autotuned) and you can actually hear her sing the lyrics-it’s not overproduced.

  40. I LOVE BOTH BUT PLEASE BRITNEY IS ABSOLUTELY ANOTHER STORY 😉 I LOVE HER MUSIC AND I WILL SUPPORT HER FOREVER FOR GIVIN’ US THIS AMAZING SONGS. BRIT 4 EVER
