Aural Only: Black Eyed Peas

You know what? Kudos to the Black Eyed Peas for dedicating their latest video to the people of Japan. The clip for “Just Can’t Get Enough” was filmed in Tokyo one week before the earthquake and tsunami struck, which makes watching it slightly depressing and uncomfortable. But in a very beautiful sort of way.

While my ears are incapable of enjoying will.i.am‘s electronically altered “voice”, I’m perfectly willing to admit this is one of the group’s less annoying numbers. Fergie sounds downright gorgeous on the chorus. Plus, the beat switch for apl.de.ap‘s verse is production magic, even though will.i.am has a tendency to pull that rabbit out of his hat way too often.

All in all, it’s not too bad. Most importantly, it’s in no way, shape or form a bastardization of Depeche Mode‘s song of the same name. Not that we’re still cringing over the Dirty Dancing reference on “The Time (The Dirty Bit)”. That would be totally ridiculous, you guys!

  1. Amazing song! Not their best single on “The Beginning”(which is a fantastic album), but a great song nonetheless.

Have a listen to songs like “Whenever”, “The Situation”, and “The Best One Yet” to hear some truly amazing BEP songs.

  2. It’s something of an amalgamation of everything going on in music right now, but in a very subtle way. It’s got modified dubstep sensibilities, 8-bit influences, obscure sampling, electronic percussion, contrasting styles with a “sweet” chorus, etc. Of course, it’s a testament to Will.I.Am and whoever else has their finger in this track that I kind of… like it actually. Unlike most of the Black Eyed Peas’ stuff.

  3. Great to here her voice naturally again. And she looks beautiful, also more natural, in this video. The other guys are boring, sadly.

  4. with every rap will.i.am does, you can sing the ABC’s to it and it would sound just as craptacular (but would make more sense) – minus the vocoder of course

  5. Good effort. Very touching the fact that the video was filmed in Tokyo and they dedicated it to all the Japanese people. Fergie sounds decent for once without all that auto-tune crap all over the song.
