Are Avatar & Pocahontas The Same Movie?

Avatar-vs-pocahontas

Am I the only one on the planet who still hasn't seen Avatar? After all the raving about the special effects, I'm thinking I'll need to remedy that in the near future. Although I wasn't planning on seeing this movie for the plot, I was kind of disappointed when a friend sent me a link to the synopsis.

Well, it was actually just the plot of Pocahontas, with certain names and words changed here and there. Basically, Avatar is just Pocahontas with blue people, and nobody bothered to tell me that. Will that hurt its chances of winning a buttload of trophies this award season? I highly doubt it.

  1. While I do find it hilarious, the score and visuals of Avatar can not be with Pocahontas. Plus Pocahontas doesn’t have Eywa calling in the cavalry and kicking everyones asses.

  2. While I see the parallels between Avatar and Pocahontas, a family member I saw the film with thought it was very similar to “Dances With Wolves”, too.

  3. Actually Avatar is even closer in resemblance to Ferngully: The Last RainForest; damn near identical. Avatar is visually impressive. 3D & IMAX should be required for maximum enjoyment. But no the plot/story of Avatar is not at all original because Disney and other studios have been hanging around in this neck of the woods (so to speak) for decades.

  4. I totally agree with JT on the one. Upon walking out of the movie, my first words were, “That was totally Ferngully for the 21st Century.” The anti-collonial, anti-racism, pro-environmentalist thing has been done before, but never this well. It’s a movie for our times, and despite the cliches involved, at least this time you can’t just write it off as a cartoon. This is major market (obligatory dirty word) penetration, in all the ight ways.

  5. Well, isn’t the idea that there are a only a handful of original stories in the world? The devil is in the details, and I consider it to be a fantastically told story. I loved it and will definitely see it again.
The messages are layered, political, ecological, and all are relevant to this day and age. Even the very idea of perception and language (look up the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis) are challenged and brought up. How about the ideas of diversity and acceptance, is that not relevant to gays?
On a side note (looking at the comments), are gays so obsessed and one-dimensional in life that things other than penis can’t actually be of interest?
Whether it’s gay focused or not, I thought we as gay human beings can be more widely diverse, or are the hate-mongerers right about us?

  6. No ur not the only one that hasnt seen it, i havent either…and the more people hype it up, the less i wanna see it…

  7. Avatar is a spectacular adventure for the senses. Real 3D is the only way to experience it. And the 3D is not used as a gimmick. It allows a deeper enjoyment of the beautiful world of Pandora. Avatar was a new and exciting experience unlike none I’ve seen before.

  8. Did anyone know this significance behind the word Avatar? I didn’t until a friend sent it to me…
    Spiritual Encyclopedia:
Definition of Avatar – Spiritual meaning and purpose of avatar
The title Avatar describes a fully freed soul incarnating directly from God on this physical planet or elsewhere. An Avatar fulfills a highly spiritual task in the name of God and returns to God after accomplishing his task. His Love for God and his creation is beyond description and imagination, his faith in God absolute as there is no difference between an Avatar and God.
Avatars are rarely in populated areas and prefer to act in a quiet retreat to peacefully fulfill their task. One of their task often is to teach guru’s or potential Gurus, to assure the continuity of God’s Divine plan in his creation.
There are but a very few avatars at the same time incarnated – usually only one. There are no Avatar-courses or Avatar-workshops, these are inventions of mankind’s fantasy and desire to abuse even the most sacred values for profit.
An Avatar always learns from God and never has any other Guru. Only God can be his Guru.
    Purpose of an Avatar
By his nature an Avatar leads an entire culture home to God while a Guru leads a number of individual disciples to God.

  9. I may get flack for this, but I was not crazy about “Avatar” it was long a drawn out, although the actors were strong, i was not impress with the lead actors. I thought it could have been better and more action driven. This was a James Cameron let down for me.

  10. Actually, in Pocahontas, there’s this character Grandmother Willow, the spirit tree that gives Pocahontas advice. Avatar took that from it and called it Eywa. And if you watched Pocahontas, you’ll see that Grandmother Willow did hit some of the invaders. And also, when Pocahontas first met John Smith, there was these leaves that surrounded him. Same thing happened with Avatar when they first met.
