Album Review: Shontelle

As Rihanna returns to pop dominance with her latest single, this begs the question–is there room for more than one Bajan singer on the Billboard charts? As it turns out, the answer is “yes”. Although her career has been plagued with a variety of setbacks and unfair comparisons (see first sentence), Shontelle has finally achieved the impossible with her most recent hit… er, “Impossible”.

While the song only peaked at number thirteen on the Hot 100, it provided enough momentum for her criminally delayed sophomore effort No Gravity. The album follows in the footsteps of Shontelligence, a “decent enough” release which failed to provide any sense of identity for the singer.

Did Shontelle have better luck the second time around? Well, sort of. The project is packed with potential club hits, from the rumored second single “Perfect Nightmare” to the Pitbull-assisted “Take Ova”. On another side of the spectrum, mellow tracks such as “Say Hello To Goodbye” seem specifically tailor-made for adult contemporary radio stations.

With that said, there’s still something to be desired after listening to No Gravity. Shontelle still comes off as an artist who’s trying to find her voice, not someone who’s “shouting from the rooftops”. It may take some time before she truly defies gravity. Right now? She isn’t standing out from anyone else on the pop scene.
