Album Review: How To Be A Lady: Vol. 1 by Electrik Red

How To Be A Lady: Vol 1 by Elctrik Red
On a day when two of the most exciting releases are attempted comebacks by Mandy Moore and Marilyn Manson, you really can't go wrong trying on something new for change. Lucky for you, the most overlooked release of the day comes from Electrik Red, a brand new girl group that throws a giant pink vibrator into the Destiny's Child formula.
In other words, these girls are assertive with their sexuality in a way that would make The Pussycat Dolls blush. Just check out the album's eighth track "W.F.Y.", which includes such lyrics as "You was like Flash in the sheets,  So fast I had to finish when you leave." Though the tune's initials stand for "We Fuck You", it's unfortunately not about doing a guy with a strap-on. Now that would really make Ms. Scherzinger blush!
With that said, all the in-your-face "girl power" becomes questionable when one considers that the project wouldn't be possible without two men–The Dream and Tricky Stewart. The mega-producers have crafted hits such as Rihanna's "Umbrella", Mariah Carey's "Touch My Body" and Jesse McCartney's "Leavin'", so even if you haven't heard of them… you've probably heard their songs.
Despite their involvement, the ladies still shine through, with The Dream acting as the Prince to their Vanity 6. Though he hasn't given them a hit that'll make these girls household names, he's crafted a cohesive album that'll unfortunately get lost in these days of digital singles.
There are some missteps here and there, particularly the dirty south inspired "Drink in My Cup" and a general overuse of sexual cliches, but all is forgiven when one hears such slick grooves as "So Good" and "Friend Lover".
Keep your fingers crossed that these girls maintain enough public interest to produce a second album, because this is just the beginning. How To Be A Lady: Vol. 1 is out today on Def Jam Records.

  1. I can’t see any of these tracks getting very popular without a complete re-invent via remix. They are all too “mid-90s-Janet-Jackson”
