Check out this video from Thailand's "Miss Tiffiny Unlimited Sexy Star Contest", a transgender beauty pageant that attracted a television audience of 15 million viewers. Thai culture refers to these individuals as "katoey", and if this report is any indication… their society is much more accepting of trans individuals than America is.

Whoops! It seems to me that while there may be some overlapping in sense and usage, the term “transvestite” isn’t actually the same as “transexual”.
These contestants are not merely dressed up as women (transvestite), they’ve worked hard to make their bodies feminine (transexual). The two terms may look similar, but they’re quite diffent. Think of it as “short-term” vs. “long-term”.
