Nicki Minaj & Cassie: “The Boys”

Let’s all give Nicki Minaj a round of applause! She’s trying really hard!

Frankly, it’s embarrassing that in a world of talented female emcees—from the spitfire lyricism of Angel Haze to the club-ready anthems of Azealia Banksthis is the woman we’re touting as the current queen of hip-hop. By now, she’s bigger than most of her male counterparts, and her pop crossover success is undeniable…

But, gosh, she is truly getting on my nerves.

A year or two ago, I might have been excited about the re-release of Minaj’s latest album, which the best blogger you will ever meet has jokingly deemed Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded: The Re-Up: RiRi’s Revenge: Reba McEntire: The Ratchetness.

Now? I’m frustrated with the direction of Nicki’s career. It’s not because she abandoned her hip-hop roots for the pop world… It’s because, well, she’s just not doing it very well. “The Boys” sounds like snippets from a handful of decent songs, mashed together for one big mess.

The video gets by on an aesthetic previously explored in “Super Bass” and “Stupid Hoe”, but it’s mostly supported by the incomparable hotness of Cassie. Seriously! That woman. Though I’m a gold star gay through and through, I’d sell my left nut to go Bi The Way on her lady parts.

Of course, to get off the topic of Cassie’s pussy juices on my face, it’s downright tragic that Minaj’s label chose “The Boys” as a lead single* for this re-release, when bonus tracks like the soon-to-be-released “Va Va Voom” would have been more suitable. Oh well! I’m not going to waste any more words on this.

Minaj will never achieve the level of artistic greatness she did on Kanye West‘s “Monster”, so I might as well start mourning her like every other human being with a brain. The rest of you can listen to crap like this. Yes, I’m being a judgmental prick right now, but THAT WOMAN. <— Pretend I am saying this like Brenda Leigh Johnson from The Closer.

* Do you call it a lead single when it’s a re-release? I’m not sure.

  1. She sucks , just like the previous update Kelly Clarxon .
Why do you bother with this though? There is good music out there if you are not enslaved to american mainstream crap

  2. Yep, the song and the video are each a mess. BUT, that Cassie is amazing, her voice, her style, AND her body.

Props to the art director on the video for going way deep in the homage to Yayoi Kusama.

  3. I adore Nicki. I do not really adore this song however but I love the visuals. Nicki always comes up with a fun world to have her cupie doll look living in.

  4. I think she’s talented but she seems to have completely lost direction of where her music is going. It all just comes off very strange but not in the fantastical way that someone like Lady Gaga is strange.

  5. I love her and think this is one of her best songs. I have always been a biggest fan of Nicki when she embraced pop and trash and fun without giving up her edge entirely, and I think this straddles the line really well. I love Cassie, too, and even though they sound fucking identical, they work well together.

  9. Because Nicki is dope and is, questionably, a part of the gay community.

Because Kelly Clarkson has a huge fan following and has talent, if she’s not your cup of tea or mine.

Because it’s surprisingly easy to just ignore the stuff you don’t like instead of being a hater with a generic opinion and nothing personal to back it up.

  13. I’m still not sure I can forgive Cassie for the reference to Train’s “Hey Soul Sister”. 🙁

  14. let’s talk about it.
i love nicki minaj. she’s bat shit crazy and she’s actually got skills on the mic. and i went and got that roman reloaded the minute it came out. ok, but nicki needs to stop having artist features on her songs, because they manage to steal the focus from her every time. being that she’s wearing a pink wig and blinking 150 times per minute, that’s really saying something.
also, i’m glad that cassie’s working a robo-andro-grace-jones thing. girl sings like a room temp robot, and now she looks like she sounds.
verses are hot, but the chorus it’s hotter. nicki needs to put out another one of her so-called “for the streets” songs, so she can prove that she’s doing her thing. (isn’t it something that she has to prove herself again and again, and lil wayne’s ass can get on shakira song without anyone questioning his credibility? that’s pop music for you, i guess.)

  15. The same thing that has happened to Rihanna is happening to NM. The hip-hop scene have ignored them. They are not buying their singles or playing there songs. Top 40, Pop, and Dance have turned to them instead. So R and NM have been making albums that are 1/2 Hip-Hop, 1/2 Pop/Dance. The Pop/Dance tracks are quite catchy – for example on Roman Reloaded there is Whip It, Va Va Voom, Masquerade, just to name a few which are all alot of fun. However NM (as well as R) don’t want to let go of their “urban” hip-hop side so they keep releasing crap like this and others to appease them. They should focus their attention on the fans that actually buy and listen to their music (the top 40 fans) and make an album that is for us!

  24. I find it funny that people keep talking shit about her “losing her musical direction” because she decided to do something different and not be the “new lil kim” like everyone wanted her to be lol Nicki is gonna do whatever makes her happy with her music. If you’re with it, then enjoy it. If not, why bother?
