How Do We Feel About Nick Minaj’s “Stupid Hoe”?

Nicki Minaj is basically a drag queen who raps. Look, we can try to tiptoe around it, but it’s impossible to ignore that eighty-percent of her (post-slutty-lollipop) style is borrowed from the drag scene. The other twenty-percent comes from the fantasy hair circuit, whose participants are often, duh, gay men.

Before anyone goes jumping down my throat, let me clarify that I’m not saying Nicki’s “stealing” from queer culture. She’s an artist who clearly loves her LGBT fans, and there’s a decent portion who love her back. While she hasn’t quite earned “gay icon” status, the truth of the matter is that a lot of man-lovin’ men go crazy for her. And it sort of makes sense.

That said, how do we feel about her new single “Stupid Hoe”? This one won’t appeal to those of you who prefer the softer, bubblegum tone of Nicki’s most recent successes “Super Bass” and “Fly”, since it’s more like the brattier, slightly annoying kid sister of her much-beloved old mixtape track “Itty Bitty Piggy”. But it’s here! And it’s been announced as the first official single from her sophomore album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. Do you think this is a good direction for Ms. Minaj, or do you lean towards her poppier offerings?

You can take a guess where we stand on this.

Hint: We’d rather be listening to this.

  1. Fucking LOVING Stupid Hoe! Yes most gays won’t like it as it is not pop or dance-y enough, but it’s a great track and I love this side of Nicki!

  2. Eh. I like her music. Even when she goes into different spectrums like the pop aspect of Super Bass and her rap aspect of this one. This one however didn’t get me as her other ones.  And I am a fan of rap and hip hop.

  3. Shitload better than Super Bass. That song fucking sucks. More songs like ‘Did it On Em’ and less shit like ‘Moment 4 Life.’

  4. What is this?  IT IS NOT MUSIC.  Nicki Minaj is a clown who raps.  This track of whatever it is is another shining example of the dumbing down of America at its lowest ebb and the death of culture.  It makes me want to vomit.

  5. I LOVE Nicki. So, I immediately downloaded this when I saw it was available on iTunes. I didn’t really like it the first time I heard it. I’ve listened to it 5 times today and I can’t accept it. She’s amazing, but this song is not. Her usual clever one-liners are dull and too much of a stretch. And it is so so so so so so so so so so repetitive (haha get it?). This song was lazy and I can’t even consider it a song. Roman better step it up or maybe tone it down for the rest of the album.

  6. It is called TASTE and OPINION. I’m pretty sure many will find your taste in music equally inadequate.

As far as the definition of music goes, THIS IS MUSIC.

  7. I love it when Nicki actually holds her own as a rapper – her verse on Kanye West’s Monster is fantastic.

I’m not sure this is her doing that, but it’s a step in the right direction.
