Aural Only: Natalia Kills

It may have taken some time, but we’re finally jumping on the Natalia Kills bandwagon. Yesterday, the up-and-coming singer debuted the video for her single “Mirrors”, and it’s a perfect blend of glamorous visuals and dark pop action. Not to mention, there’s a slightly awkward yet utterly fabulous nod to Hamlet.

Without a doubt, people are going to compare Natalia to her Cherrytree Records labelmate Lady Gaga. It’s an unavoidable connection, especially when the first few seconds of this song sound exactly like Gaga. But whatever, hoes! This track is fierce as fuck. And you know that’s not a word we use lightly. Don’t be surprised if you start chanting along during the bridge… “Sex! Love! Control! Vanity!”

  1. OMG…that main photo…I was having flashbacks from the 80’s…is this look coming back? Gee, I must be OLD if the bad fashions from my youth are making a comeback! LOL

  3. I am starting to like this song. Was listening to a remix by Frankmusik yesterday. She’s been opening for Robyn on her North American tour.

  4. Great track…very 80’s Eurhythmics, but I personally think the vocal is weak, doesn’t cut, has no grit or credibility. Maybe her name should be “Natalia Wounds”…”Kills” is too strong for what she really puts out here.

  5. Yeah, that Frankmusic remix is 100% the way to go with this track. Makes it original, which this version is lacking massively.

  6. Horrible lyrics, weak vocals, generic music. I really don’t like this at all, and I usually *love* dark electronic music.

  7. She opened for Robyn in Portland a couple weeks back!!! Had no idea who she was, but really like this song. She was a great performer, but Robyn was amazing!!! (Got both their autographs)

  8. I saw her when she opened for Robyn. She was definitely fierce and her dancers and she kept coming down towards me and grabbing me. It was awesome! unfortunately, her music doesn’t stand out much.

  9. I think that she’s awesome. T.I, if you think she’s trying to copy Lady Gaga, get your head out your ass. Just because Lady Gaga has become well known for her freakish style and some of the morbid tunes she’s put out, does not mean shit. Natalia is her own person, and the style of her videos have more to do with her creativity stemming from her work as a short film director. She actually reminds me a bit more of Rihanna, during her Russian Roulette time. She’s got the darker, edgier side, that Lady Gaga doesn’t really have. Lady Gaga’s music and videos are more random, see Telephone and Bad Romance. Whereas Natalia’s Mirrors video follows the song rather closely. It talks about sex, and BDSM, with hints toward the occult. She rocks, and while I think that some singers who are vastly popular at the moment will eventually have us scratching our heads in confusion whenever their name is mentioned, whereas Natalia has the skills and creativity to go far. She may eventually become less popular, as most singers do, but she has the drive and skills to build a steady fanbase of which I already consider myself a member. As for Dewitt, I have this song on my MP3 player, along with Zombie, and I’m constantly thinking, saying, and singing the words Sex, Love, Control, Vanity. It’s definitely a catchy song. Her music is rather reminiscent of the 80’s sound.
