Album Review: Katie Melua

In 2006, Katie Melua was the United Kingdom’s bestselling female artist (Thanks Wikipedia!), and Europe’s highest-selling European female artist. So can someone please explain why she doesn’t get anywhere near as much exposure on this side of the pond?

Sure, her cover of The Cure‘s “Just Like Heaven” appeared in a movie of the same title, which starred Reese Witherspoon and Marc Ruffalo. But to put things into perspective, none of her four studio albums have broken beyond the hundredth spot on the US Billboard album charts. She received some buzz for her latest video “The Flood”, but that had more to do with the scantily-clad men than the actual song. Essentially, the American audience has been ignoring this humongous talent for seven years.

Consider this less of an album review than a recommendation. By whatever means, get your hands on a copy of Melua’s latest album The House. The entire project was produced by William Orbit–who you may be familiar with from Madonna‘s Ray of Light–and it’s absolutely stunning. If you’re into mellow, slightly dark singer-songwriters, then you don’t want to miss out on this.

  2. Great video for “The Flood”. The song sounds like it should be in a James Bond flick. Love her! Thanks for turning me on to this wonderful music and amazing talent!
