Watch the “Plainclothes” trailer!

Over the past few weeks, we’ve gotten first looks at an eclectic crop of up-and-coming LGBTQ+ movies—everything from coming-of-age comedies, to high-fantasy love triangles, to razzling-dazzling big screen musicals, to cruising thrillers, to an animated tale of gays in space.

Set in 1990s upstate New York, this paranoid thriller-meets-romantic drama follows young undercover cop Lucas (Tom Blyth) who is on assignment nabbing gay men attempting to cruise in a suburban mall.

Deeply closeted, Lucas tries to protect his secret from the rest of his police squad and his overbearing family, but that becomes even more difficult after he unexpectedly falls for a would-be mark, the handsome, experienced Andrew (Russell Tovey). This debut feature from writer-director Carmen Emmi was a Sundance sensation.

In select theaters on September 19.
