Tracey Thorn: “Joy”

photo

Everything But The Girl‘s Tracey Thorn has achieved the impossible. She has created a modern, original Christmas song that I don’t actually hate! “Joy” is the lead single from Thorn’s holiday project Tinsel and Lights. I’d say it almost feels like a companion track for Joni Mitchell‘s “River” (which Thorn covers on the album), but that might be giving it too much credit?

Still! When’s the last time someone made a Christmas song this good? Don’t even try to say something like “8 Days of Christmas” or that dumb Lady Gaga song about having sex with a tree, because I will punch you in the face.

  4. To me, she is a living embodiment of the cliche “could sing the phone book and make it sound good”….. She, Julia Fordham and Lisa Stansfield ( oh OK, and Dusty Springfield)….
