Gloria Estefan: “Hotel Nacional”

Dear Madonna,

I’m writing this letter to encourage you to watch Gloria Estefan‘s new music video for “Hotel Nacional”. While fans jump to defend your mediocre Superbowl performance by calling any legitimate criticism “ageist” or “sexist”, I would just like to call attention to the fact that Ms. Estefan is also female, only one year older than you, has won just as many Grammy awards and is about 900% more fabulous.

Please study this video and learn how to have fun with your post-fifty career. You’re a fucking pop music legend. You don’t need Nicki Minaj or M.I.A. to be relevant. And, while we’re at it, you should stop calling your collaborators “irrelevant”. You should stop calling people who are heavily influenced by you “reductive”. It’s tacky, even if they have upset you with their actions.

Moving on, the video for “Gimme All Your Luvin'” should have been inspired by The Rocky Horror Picture Show, featuring a wardrobe that makes you look like the evil queen on Once Upon A Time. It should have involved drag queens, Susan Lucci and a bunch of hunky sailors. Basically, you should have made the video for “Hotel Nacional”. But you didn’t. This is why Gloria Estefan is so much better than you. She’s better than she’s ever been. You’re just a shadow of your former self.

In closing, I ask you, do you bleed for your art? Because Gloria Estefan does. I rest my case.

L-U-V,

– Dewitt

  1. Sounds like the track from “We No Speak Americano” by Yolanda Be Cool and D Cup, which was a big hit in Europe but not so much here.

  2. Didn’t she used to make music that wasn’t techno crap? I vaguely recall her making music that didn’t scream “cheap gay dance hall.”

  3. Madonna was hot in the eighties, no doubt, she pushed the envelope and everyone loved it, then she got all cuntish and kabalaish and pretty much alienated most of her fans, she has plenty of money she should retire and let it go, she is just past her time, she had her run but it”s time to stop already, she is not relevant anymore

  4. Yeah, yeah, the song is…whatever.

Now can we please talk about the four hot sailor boys surrounding Ms. Lucci?  Especially that one to the left of her on screen (her right)?  DAMN!  He is some fucking hot semen, er–seaman!

  5. okay, let me just start by saying that I think the GMAYL video sucks, and the song is fun but a notch above suck (and I am a huge Madonna fan)… but let me address this video above:
1- this song is way more vapid than GMAYL, cheesy techno production from 3rd rate clubs in early 90s at best (kind of like some of Gaga’s tracks on second album)
2- this video borrows from so many sources, how come it is okay for her to quote others but not okay for Madonna to do so?
3- Madonna brought into the forefront these types of narrative videos in the 80s, while Estefan’s videos back then sucked ass (though I really like her, her voice, her tracks, etc, I am a fan)… so I’d say she’d never do this type of video now if this had not become the norm…
4- if Madonna had the same or similar song and basically just stood there for the majority of the track, and if she appeared this little on her videos, she’d be crucified…
5- I bet no one will be talking about Gloria Estefan in the next 6 months as they will of Madonna…
6- I think for Gloria Estefan to do this kind of music and video at her age is WAY more of a sell out than Madonna do what she is doing…
7- why do we need to put one lady against the other? why do they need to be compared? (I only did it because of the post, as a response to it)… why can’t they co-exist and be appreciated or critiqued on their own merits?
8-why not critique male musicians in their 50s with 20 plus year careers, their songs, videos, and physical appearance/appeal?

  6. money is not the only reason to retire, people want to lead a fulfilling life for as long as they can, and a professional activity can help that… when u turn her age consider retiring…

  7. madonnas new song sucks.. it comes to me as she is trying to be hip, still young  and also getting irrelevant collaborations. Estefans song is way better

  8. Wow  I like it when Gloria E lets her hair down.  I was smiling all through this video.  Muy Muy Caliente!

  9. Famous male musicians in their 50s?    Well there was only one that comes to mind … Michael Jackson… and he got more than his share of criticism.  By the way Gloria Estefan isn’t even in the same league as MJ or Madonna… not even close by any measure!

  10. You’re not absolutely right about this article. Madonna and Gloria Estefan always had different audience since the beginning: Madonna was more commercial and teens appealing while Gloria was more Adult Contemporary oriented from the first day. So it’s obvious that they are doing different things in music even now when they are not in their hey-days anymore 😉

  11. yes, Madonna should have exited her audience of 114 million, pondered what she is doing wrong and watched a flop Gloria Estefan music video LMFAO!!!!!!!!

  12. Not relevant anymore, with a number 1 single in 55 countries, a 2012 Golden Globe Award, 84 Million dollars raised in revenue from the NFL Half Time Show and a new world tour already selling out with ticket costs upwards of $300 per ticket?

What planet are you living on?

  13. I loved it! Gloria is a beautiful, gorgeous and sexy woman. Madonna is pointy, bony, and looks like a shrew.

  14. Did no one else hear the Mos Eisley Cantina in that?

I loved it… it was like Star Wars + Rocky Horror + Latina + Drag….

  15. Gloria and Madonna are two hugely, worldwide successful music artists who’ve impacted the musical landscape in powerful but very distinct ways. There is no way you can compare them both, and, quite frankly, we should not have to. They have each made and continue making their respective contributions to music. Fortunately, many Gloria fans are Madonna fans and vice versa. They have both intersected personally and professionally (more so Emilio Estefan with Madonna) many times over the last 20-25 years.  I celebrate the fact that each of them as women artists in their 50s, and as EXCELLENT business women in a male dominated music industry for the last 25-30 years are this month of February 2012 currently the talk of the moment (today’s unfortunate passing of Whitney Houston changes all this though). Now, strictly speaking as a Madonna fan I wish for two things: 1) diversity in her musical styles and genre exploration, and 2) scaling back the collaboration with the flavors of the month. She doesn’t need them one bit. She is….MADONNA.

  16. So funny how some people defend their idol! I like Madonna too but this round musically Gloria Estefan wins! She is fresh, new, inovating by blending different sounds and make it sounding as todays music! And ooooooow what is it deliciously camp! Love “Hotel Nacional” by Gloria Estefan!
