Carly Rae Jepsen: “This Kiss”

photo

Carly Rae Jepsen‘s breakout album Kiss is packed with squeaky clean, saccharine pop songs that make the Disney Channel seem XXX-rated. Sure, she may be on the brink of 27 years-old, but most of her material sounds like it was written for someone ten years her junior.

And I fucking love it.

Though my dear co-blogger J. Harvey rolls his eyes when I sing her praises, I can’t help but love the innocence and bouncy fun of the all-too-perky singer’s sophomore project. Wherever I go, whatever I do, I will proudly declare my status as a Carly Rae Jephead.

So, uh, don’t let your hatred of “Call Me Maybe” misguide you! This record’s packed with songs that call to mind Robyn, Kylie Minogue, and to a lesser extent, The Cars. If you want to get your feet wet, skip the duet with Justin Bieber and focus on tracks like “Tiny Little Bows”, “Curiosity” and third single “This Kiss”.

Speaking of the devil, a sort-of-lackluster music video just came out for the latter song. You should watch it, maybe.

  1. I loved “Call Me Maybe,” but this new single is pretty forgettable, I’m afraid, and seems to have already bombed badly. Carly Rae may be the Debby Boone of this era in terms of having a huge-selling single and never being heard from again. Maybe in another 25 years she will be doing infomercials for “Lifestyle Lift.”
