What’s With All This Sherlock Holmes Homo Hoopla?

Yesterday, the blogs were buzzing about a homosexual subplot to Guy Ritchie's upcoming Sherlock Holmes film. This was all fueled by a quote by Robert Downey Jr. saying, "We're two men who happen to be roommates, wrestle a lot and share a bed. It's bad-ass. Guy wanted to make this about the relationship between Watson and Holmes. They're both mean and complicated."

You know what I think? I'll tell you what I think. People are blowing this out of proportion. While I'd love to see Robert Downey Jr. preparing to pound Jude Law from behind, muffling his groans when he says "I don't think I can take it" with a slap on the ass and a big ol' "Suck it up, it's elementary, my dear Watson"… wait, where was I?

The point is that Ritchie's interpretation may have a homoerotic edge, but there's no evidence yet that the two characters' relationship will actually be homosexual in nature. And no detective would ever make assumptions without substantial evidence! Even if it involves thinking about Jude Law naked.

  1. This isn’t the first time this angle has been used. There was a Sherlock Holmes movie back in late 70s or 80s that I don’t remember the title of. One of the minor sub-plots was a “prima ballerina” chasing after Holmes to father a child for her. He let her down by intimating that he and Watson were lovers. Watson, at the time, was cavorting and dancing with the women of the ballet troup, but after Holmes “confessed” to the ballerina and the word started to spread, the men of the troup replaced the women and danced with Watson.
Damn, now I’m going to have to try and track down that title.
