Weekly Top Ten Wild Card: The Comeback

People put too much stock in first impressions. There are those days when you’re feeling all-around shitty, and you just can’t “get it up” (perhaps quite literally) to be excited about meeting a new person. You know what we mean? Wouldn’t you love a second chance to woo that individual with your undeniable charm?

Well, we can’t really do much for you, but we can help out the pop divas competing in today’s Wild Card round. All four of their songs failed to break through on our Weekly Top Ten charts, resulting in some displeasure at their untimely exits. Now they’re fighting for the final slot on our upcoming countdown…

So who’s most deserving of a big comeback? In one corner, we have British beauties Jessie J and Clare Maguire. They’ll be making their case against the “Jennifers”, also known as Jennifer Lopez and Jennifer Hudson. Only one (maybe two) can make it to the next round, and it’s up to you to vote for the best. Oh, and we’d urge you to pay close attention to this week’s poll! There may or may not be a surprise twist.

– Dewitt

To listen to these selections and cast your vote, follow the JUMP:

Clare Maguire – The Last Dance: File this under pop music that doesn’t feel “temporary”. It’s been several weeks since this song appeared on our charts, and we simply cannot forget about it. Maguire’s vocals haunt us in our dreams. Our dreams of riding on a unicorn while simultaneously fucking Mark Ruffalo from behind. Don’t judge!

Jennifer Lopez f/ Pitbull – On The Floor: We love how this music video makes Jennifer Lopez seem like an enchanted goddess who’s magically forcing people to dance to her song. Not that you’d have to force us to dance to this song. As far as mindless club-pop goes, it’s actually quite decent once you get past the unnecessary verse by Pitbull.

Jessie J f/ B.o.B – Price Tag: Why isn’t Jessie J a bigger deal yet? We’re not asking this question because we’re legitimately concerned. We’re asking it because the world keeps telling us that she should be. Even though “Price Tag” is totally adorable, it’s taking some time to catch on with the American audience. What’s the deal, y’all?

Jennifer Hudson – Where You At: Ooh gurl! Fierce! Fabulous! Insert your own random uber-gay exclamation. We’re still not sure if this is Jennifer Hudson’s new music video or a commercial for Weight Watchers. Either way, she’s looking damn good. But, um, is it wrong that we liked her a little more when she was fat? Don’t answer that. [UPDATE: It’s probably too late to swing the vote, but check out this free download of Dave Aude’s “Where You At” remix. Bringing J. Hud back to the club!]

SECRET BONUS OPTION!

Oh Land – Son of A Gun: When you turn a former ballerina into a pop star, the results are fucking awesome. Oh Land is clear evidence of this. The choreography for “Son of A Gun” alone was enough to make us watch this video five or seven times. And it helps that the song ain’t too shabby either…

  1. I hate you, Dewitt. Oh Land deserves to be featured on her own. I’m gonna go with her since she doesn’t stand a chance, although I’d love to see Claire Maguire back.

  2. Oh Land is fucking rad! It’s a pity she doesn’t stand a snowball’s chance in Hell on these charts. ๐Ÿ™

  3. 100% to Clare Maguire – I love the singles by Jessie J and Oh Land, but The Last Dance is amazing.

  4. oooh! So I didnt have enough time to listen to them… but i did make an effort to watch the jennifer hudson vid. I think i agree. skinny jenny not my fav.

…I know you said dont answer that question…. BUT DEAL WITH IT! ๐Ÿ˜›

  5. Dewitt, so how about extending your top 10 to a Top 20.
read the comments on the last week’s chart.
there should be enough place for everyone. and maybe then songs like these will have enough time to grow on ppl.
personally i voted for jessie j, cos i know j.lo will get enough votes to be no1 among these.

  6. Nex,

While I fully understand where you’re coming from, a top twenty countdown would take nearly twice as much time to write than our current Weekly Top Ten. Sadly, these posts (when compared to other features on this blog) don’t receive nearly enough traffic or interest to justify extending them beyond our current format. I do, however, thank you and our fellow followers for your feedback, even when you’re giving me a hard time. Let it be known that we try our best to accommodate your various requests.

  7. just a small suggestion:

you can write a description for the first 10 entries on the chart like u do now, leaving the last 10 entries with only name + song title.

although i can understand that making hyperlinks for 10 more entries could be frustrating :/

anyways, up to u. huge thanks for acknowledging. i won’t bother with same issues again.

  8. Make it at least a Top 15. 10 songs should remain and 5 should be brand new. I voted for Jessie J, although I want her, Clare and Oh Land to be there this weekend.

  9. It’s a sad indictment of the readership of this blog when the only track with a glimmer of originality comes last.

Claire Maquire sounds like Florence and the Machine.
Jessie J sounds like Lily Allen
Jennifer Hudson sounds like Alicia Keyes
Jennifer Lopez… well, this song is just a rip off of Lambada with some beats and vocals clinging on like hungry fleas on an dying dog.

  10. I am all about the Jennifers!!!

Since I can’t vote for both I went for Jennifer Hudson.

Thanks so much for the fierce free download!

  11. I don’t like Jessie J. And that song is a total rip off of Don’t lie by BEP.

    My suggestion:
Take Over Control – Afrojack feat Eva Simons

  12. BEP’s “don’t lie” was a total fail. it had an awesome awesome verse, but a total crap ass chorus.
anyway, the verse of jessie j’s song reminds me more of jordin sparks’ “tattoo”

  13. What about a top 12 or top 15?

Another suggestion for an upcoming song that is getting alot of hype is the Black Eyed Peas new one “Just Can’t Get Enough.”

I know some peeps on here hate the BEP, but this is a great song that is mostly Fergie dominated.

    Vid to come out soon.

  14. I agree with Nathan, Top 12 would be great. Songs need time to grow on people. Or another suggestion would be to only have two debuts instead of four. I would have liked to see Oh Land reviewed on her own and not with all the pop divas. She is an amazing talent and I hope she gets more recognized now that she lives in the US.
