Weekly Top Ten Wild Card: Indie Vs. Pop

What’s up, indie nerds? Are you ready to bitch-slap some pop bitches? Well, you better get your shit together! Today’s Wild Card round is pitting two outstanding bands against a dashing duo of radio-friendly divas. In one corner, we have TV On The Radio and Belle & Sebastian. And their competition? Naturally, it’s Kelly Rowland and Selena Gomez

You know the drill by now! Four tracks are presented, and only one can make it onto our Weekly Top Ten. Your votes determine who’ll achieve this prestigious honor. Speaking of which, have you voted on this week’s charts? The polls are open until Friday!

If you’re not feeling any of these options, we urge you to leave a comment with your pick for the next countdown. There are no limits in regards to genre, sound or style. Just let us know what you’re listening to, and maybe you’ll see it on our rankings!

To listen to this week’s selections and cast your vote, follow the JUMP:

TV On The Radio – Will Do: Funny enough, this is the closest to “pop” that we’ve ever heard TV On The Radio. It also happens to be the sexiest indie track we’ve heard since Lykke Li’s “Little Bit”. Seriously, who wants to make out to this song? Like, right now. We’re willing to leave the office and travel to you…

Alex Gaudino f/ Kelly Rowland – What A Feeling: As much as we love hearing Kelly Rowland over a thumping beat, all these dance collaborations are sort of starting to blend in with one another. This is a far cry from her epic diva breakout on “When Love Takes Over”, but it’s still a step in the right direction.

Selena Gomez & The Scene – Who Says: We’re surprised no one has suggested this one! After all, it’s been thrown into the same “It Gets Better” spectrum as Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way”, Katy Perry’s “Firework” and Pinks “Fuckin’ Perfect”. Is it too sugary sweet? Who says Selena Gomez doesn’t deserve to be on our charts?

Belle & Sebastian – I Want The World To Stop: Though this track was released back in September, we had a few suggestions from readers to bring it on board. The last time Belle & Sebastian appeared in our Wild Card round, they were ultimately defeated by (ugh) Maroon 5. Which inferior artist will defeat them this time around? Just kidding. We’re not that snobby.

  1. Since I’m (one of) the people who has been talking up the Belle and Sebastian track, I voted for it. But the Kelly Rowland track is also quite worthy. But vote for Belle and Sebastian anyway, everyone! 🙂

  2. @Jimmy, this is a gay website. No point pretending that you are any special.

Personally i love indie, but i’m not gonna bash someone for liking donna summer….

  3. Dewitt, have you heard “End of The World” by Matt Alber? Great song by an indie artist that you can throw up here in the wild cards.

  4. Ah! I helped promote Belle and Sebastian, but I’m really lovin’ the new TV on the Radio track. Uh-oh…
Of course, seeing as neither is going to win, it’s not a big deal.

That said, I usually try to stay level-headed, especially on the internet… but who does this Selena Gomez chick think she is? No, I don’t know her, so I know I shouldn’t be judging, but I’m ready enough to judge her song as pretentious and call her just another girl jumping on the acceptance bandwagon. Of course, it’s not a bad wagon, but I hate being manipulated. “I’m no beauty queen, I’m just beautiful me?” Slag off, girl.

  5. Selena Gomez is another Disney Channel product which in and of itself is enough to pass on her. She is by far not the best thing to come out of there. I will say, however, that I was surprised with Emily Osment’s full length debut “Fight or Flight’. Sure it may be mostly pandering dance music (as opposed to the rock sound from her EP) but it’s not very different from what the current pop/electro-pop/dance scenes are cranking out by the bucketful these days. That and she chose to not sign with Hollywood Records (Disney’s in-house label) and instead signed to Wind-Up, better known for hard metal artists like Evanescence and Seether, and rock/pop-rock/AOR bands Creed and Five for Fighting. My point (for I ramble) is that Selena Gomez is just another Disney construct trying to appeal to the tween crowd, but every often Disney manages to turn out someone who bucks the pandering trend and makes music that is not only a notch above fluff but also somewhat enjoyable.

  6. Selena Gomez is winning? How old are we? Must be all the A&F t’s going to your brains!! No brainer, Kelly.

  7. Kelly deserves to be there. She was in the countdown the last two summers. Selena will only last one week as always happens with her songs.

  8. I absolutely love TV on the Radio. Belle & Sebastian are okay. A little TOO indie for me. Although I do love indie music, I tend to dislike the very indie and/or generic bands.

Just last month, Sleigh Bells released “Riot Rhythm” as a single. You should put that up. It’s a big dance track with the best beat you’ll hear for a while, backed up by the sing-song melody and the sweet girl voice. Hardcore bubblegum pop!

TV on the Radio’s got my vote.

  9. Wow, this “Wild Card” vote thing consistently disproves the myth that gays have taste.

Harsh, I know. But really?!?!! Selena fucking Gomez over Tv on the Radio and Belle & Sebastian? may the lord have mercy on your iTunes.
