Weekly Top Ten: Old School Vs. New School

Are you ready for Cher to take over the Weekly Top Ten? The sixty-four year-old diva stunned us all with her contribution to the Burlesque soundtrack, “You Haven’t Seen The Last of Me”. Will it be enough to take down new school stars like Pink, Katy Perry, Rihanna and Robyn? Stay tuned in to find out!

Hopefully, you weren’t too attached to Ricky Martin, Fefe Dobson, Goldfrapp or Rihanna’s “What’s My Name”. These four selections didn’t receive enough votes to stay on the countdown, so we had to send them packing along with Wild Card rejects Lee DeWyze, Chromeo and Kendall. Better luck next time, guys!

So how does this all work? If you’re a Weekly Top Ten virgin, grab onto Justun‘s round butt cheeks while I explain the rules to you. Each week you’ll be presented with ten songs. You get to vote for up to three that you’d like to see move on to the next week. From those results, we’ll take the five tunes with the highest percentages, a song we save and four other contributions. These selections will make up the following week’s charts.

Wishing there was a “none of the above” option? Well, quit your bitching and tell us what you want to see on the charts by leaving a suggestion in the comments. We listen to nearly every song you recommend, and if we think it’ll have a chance… you might see it here next time around!

– Dewitt

To check out the charts and cast your vote, follow the JUMP:

  1. Pink – Raise Your Glass (LW – 1, W8): “Raise Your Glass” tops our charts for the third week in a row! On an entirely unrelated note, can we talk about how Pink’s take on “Whataya Want From Me” is infinitely better than Adam Lambert’s version? Just sayin’.
  2. Glee Cast – Teenage Dream (LW – 6, W2): Just because this came in second place, don’t expect us to include every Glee song on our countdown! We gave this one a chance because of its popularity and context within the episode. Not to mention, Darren Criss is totally adorable…
  3. Katy Perry – Firework (LW – 2, W4): I’m really glad people have stopped jerking off Katy Perry’s cock, talking about how this video was so poignant and emotional. I’ve watched episodes of Ghost Whisperer that were more moving than this shit. Er, um… I mean, work it out, gurl! Songs about being yourself are so hot right now.
  4. Rihanna – Only Girl (In The World) (LW – 3, W11): Rihanna didn’t have much luck on our charts with her latest single, but this one’s still running strong after eleven weeks. Will it be able to last four more rounds and comfortably retire from the rankings?
  5. Robyn – Indestructible (LW – 4, W6): This. Is. Hardcore! We’re getting ultra-pumped for the finale of the Body Talk series. Between this song and “Call Your Girlfriend”, it’s shaping up to be a very exciting album! Y’all bitches better pick it up when it hits stores.
  6. Utada Hikaru – Goodbye Happiness (LW – 10, W2): Since Utada was practically tied with Rihanna for sixth place, we couldn’t resist saving her on this week’s edition. The video for “Goodbye Happiness” is just too damn cute! Of course, when it comes to bedroom dance scenes, Kendall beats her in the sexy department…
  7. Cher – You Haven’t Seen The Last of Me (DEBUT): Have you bedazzled your coin purse yet? Because there’s no better way to celebrate Cher’s return to the music scene. We were on the fence about Burlesque, but this epic ballad sent us over the edge.
  8. Black Eyed Peas – The Time (The Dirty Bit) (DEBUT): My mother always told me that if you don’t have anything nice to say, make a passive-aggressive statement that implies you have nothing nice to say…
  9. Mike Posner – Please Don’t Go (WILD CARD): We were suspicious that Mike Posner would win the Wild Card, but we didn’t realize he’d win by such a landslide! This cutie took in more than half of the votes, taking down worthy competition from Chromeo, Kendall and Lee DeWyze.
  10. Hurts – Stay (DEBUT): You either “get” Hurts, or you don’t get Hurts! This English duo didn’t fare too well the last time they appeared on the charts, but there’s a chance they’ll have better luck in this round, right? Keep repeating that to yourself. Unfortunately, we don’t think it’s going to happen.

  1. Mike Posner, BEP and Hurts for me this week. I have to support the last one because they don’t have a chance to continue.

The video of Better than today by Kylie dropped yesterday, so she should be eligible next week. As well as the video for her collaboration with Taio Cruz on Higher. I know this song was here before, but maybe deserves a second chance. Considering that the American single will feature Travie McCoy instead of Kylie, it’s worth a try.

  2. This week the choice was very easy. It’s almost like I get to vote for Katy Perry twice!!!

Teenage Dream was already the best song of the year and now with the Glee version it’s the most bestest song of the year EVER!

Firework is fantastic and so is Only Girl in the World.

I have no idea what people see in Pink. Adam Lambert is a bazillion times more interesting and entertaining. His version of Whataya Want From Me is also one of the best songs of the year while Pink’s stuff isn’t even a blip on the radar for me.

  3. I agree with Ricky…Teenage Dream is THE song of the year! I wake up every day with TD rocking through my head. Indestructible is simply amazing. And Cher? Love her, love her, love her!

  4. You don’t get P!nk’s appeal?

VERY few people could have pulled off a performance like that. She made it look almost effortless to spin around mid-air soaking wet and still sing beautifully and on-key.

She always sticks up for the “different” people in any community (including gays). She doesn’t give a flying fuck about what music industry critics think of her or her music and isn’t afraid to speak her mind. Besides that….she writes or co-writes all her own music, plays guitar, and has a powerful set of lungs. She doesn’t rely on the breathy vocals that Britney, Rihanna and sometimes Katy Perry do. She can sing without the use of autotune and belt out a song like no one else, or hold back and really sing beautifully.

  5. Besides, she looks like she’s having an absolute blast in every video and doesn’t take herself too seriously. She’s got a total sense of humor about herself.

  6. “Teenage shit” song of the year? Well, at least you guys are not claiming that “California crap” is song of the year.

Song of the year for me: Need You Now & Rude Boy

  7. I don’t disagree about all of the things you listed about Pink – they are all true statements. I do disagree wholeheartedly with Dewitt’s statement that Pink’s version of Whataya Want From Me is INFINITELY better that Adam Lambert’s. He did a fantastic job bringing the song to life and Pink’s is certainly respectable, but there is no need to discredit a fine talent like Adam to build Pink up. (and you did not do that at all, Javier. Dewitt did)

  8. Well i’m not surprised Pink sounds awesome on Whataya Want From Me since she was the one who wrote it. ..

  9. Anything but The Time by the BEP. They’ve sold out mega big time. Have a listen to pre-Fergie BEP and compare that to current BEP

  10. Hurts, Mike Posner and Cher for me this week. Three different performers and three different styles. In regards to the Teenage Dream debate, I have to admit is one of my favorite songs of the year, but not “the song of 2010”.

My suggestions for the Wild Card are:
    – Keri Hilson: Pretty Girl Rock
    – Erika Jayne: One Hot Pleasure
    – Nicki Minaj: Right Thru Me
    – September: Resuscitate Me

I like the last one specially because she’s from Sweden and she’s making a comeback to the scene after 3 years. Check the video just for the hot guy in it.

  11. I voted purely to vote AGAINST Cher. She had to open her mouth and let political drivel slip out. That and the fact that her singing leaves a TON to be desired! How that woman has ever made it in music, I’ll never know. I guess a lot of tone deaf people made her famous.

  12. HIKARU FTW! She writes and produces everything she touches. She’s worth her weight in gold.

I guess Hurts and either Mrs. Brand or Ms. Carlsson are good enough for numbers two and three.

  13. Someone pointed out on her “Aural Only” feature that if this song hits #1 on Billboard, she’ll be the only artist, EVER, to have a #1 song in 6 different decades; the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s, and 10s. Her voice isn’t always pitch-perfect, but it is very distinct and has a lot of power to it.

  14. I guess it’s more of a personal preference thing. Adam’s version is quite good, and technically great- he hits all the notes (especially the high ones) right on. Pink’s version, to me, seems much more gutsy and emotive…something Adam’s lacks, in my ears. But you are right, they’re both good in different ways, and I don’t think Pink’s version is INFINITELY better.

  15. Hurts, and if I could vote for it three times, I would. But since I can’t, I’ll add in Cher and Glee (Can’t stop playing that one…)

  16. p.s. on “Love Comes Around” older white guy with beefy young black guy yummm. and the brunette from about 0:35 to 0:45, he? she? it! LOL

  17. I like the new Keri Hilson song. She pays homage to Donna Summer, Janet Jackson and TLC in the video. I also like the new Alesha Dixon single. It’s called Radio and basically is Dancing on my own with different lyrics and at higher speed.

  18. I voted for Mike Posner, Hurts and Cher. Her new single already has remixes out by Almighty, Stonebridge and Dave Aude.

I second the suggestion for September’s new single, it just came out 3 days ago in Sweden and she’s looking hotter than ever. She might look a bit like Robyn with her new ‘do. I am beginning to like the Taio Cruz single with Kylie now that I’ve seen the video.

  19. Utada FTW for me. I voted for her, Cher, and Robyn.

And no offense Dewitt, but I kinda hate you for choosing THAT song out of the entire Glee catalog…but I think I’m one of the tens of people that don’t care much for Katy Perry.

  20. I am loving the Cher song. It’s really growing on me. I second the suggestion for Erika Jayne and September’s new singles. My votes also went to Black Eyed Peas and Hurts.

  21. I’m not surprised Hurts is not getting the love. When you have fireworks coming out Katy Perry’s boobs and people are treating Teenage Dream like a Beatles classic.

I’ll go with the suggestion for the R&B divas: Nicki Minaj and Keri Hilson. Loved her video chanelling Donna Summer and TLC.

  22. The Cher song sucks. It is so dull, and she sounds really really old. Her age has not done well for her voice.

  23. I’ve loved Utada Hikaru since my obsession with the song Hikari (and to a lesser extent the english version “simple and clean”) And i really love that you’re including an interntional artist in the list! I love this woman and she so talented- she mixes all the music and is a true singer, writer, pruducer, everything!! I swear i did a double take and a bit of pee came out when i saw her name- was so excited!

So can anyone tell me if she’s on the american charts at all? She hasn’t done much in Australia….

  24. I second the natasha bedingfield song, “strip me.” I also LOVE the bran van 3000 song called “grace” – what a far out amazing and trippy video – love it – aren’t they Canadian.

My 3rd choice would be Kylie – Better than Today. Not her best choice for a 3rd single (Aphrodite would’ve been much better) but still an ok song.

  25. My choices for wildcards or debuts would be the following:

    -Fucking Perfect by Pink
    -Strip Me by Natasha Bedingfield
-Just The Way You Are by Bruno Mars
    -Cannibal by Kesha

And i do have to say I am stoked that Bran Van 3000 is back. I remember drinking beer to their songs way way way back on my patio. They are so much fun. I am not sure if “Grace” will catch on, but I hope peeps will give it a chance.
