Weekly Top Ten: Katy Makes A Move

Well, it’s official–Lady Gaga is back on top. The “Alejandro” singer has flip-flopped with Kylie Minogue for yet another week, as they both struggle to claim the ultimate title of 2010’s Song of Summer. But neither of these ladies are safe with Katy Perry in the mix. Although you never quite embraced “California Gurls”, you’re definitely enjoying her latest effort.

However, you didn’t share the same enthusiasm for Taylor Swift, David Archuleta, Cazwell or The Freemasons. These four couldn’t gain enough votes to stay on the countdown, so we had to send them packing along with Wild Card rejects Jay Sean, Gyptian and Sean Kingston.

So how does this all work? If you’re a Weekly Top Ten virgin, take this oil and rub it all over Gavin Waters‘ muscular body while I explain the rules to you. Each week you’ll be presented with ten songs. You get to vote for up to three that you’d like to see move on to the next week. From those results, we’ll take the five tunes with the highest percentages, a song we save and four other contributions. These selections will make up the following week’s charts.

Wishing there was a “none of the above” option? Well, quit your bitching and tell us what you want to see on the charts by leaving a suggestion in the comments. We listen to nearly every song you recommend, and if we think it’ll have a chance… you might see it here next time around!

To check out the charts and vote, follow the JUMP:

  1. Lady Gaga – Alejandro (LW – 2, W12): The little monsters recovered from last week’s loss, trampling Kylie Minogue by thirty-seven votes. But can she keep up her lead now that there’s another fierce competitor biting at her ankles? Stay tuned in to find out!
  2. Katy Perry – Teenage Dream (LW – 4, W4): Of course, you watched this video ten times in a row. We’re not going to blame you, because Josh Kloss is beyond sexy. It’s a good thing he’s only acting as Katy’s fake boyfriend. We’re still hanging onto the hope that he’s playing for our team. Please don’t shatter our non-teenage dream.
  3. Kylie Minogue – All The Lovers (LW – 1, W14): Speaking of sexy music videos, how could we forget about this one? Even though the dancefloor diva took a big hit this week, we’re confident that she’ll get back up on her feet. After all, she always does…
  4. Adam Lambert – If I Had You (LW – 3, W10): BAM! It seemed like just yesterday that y’all were chastising Lambert for acting “too gay”, and now you’re dancing on tables and rubbing body glitter on yourself while this song plays at the club. Okay, so maybe that’s an exaggeration, but it’s still nice to see this jam in the competition.
  5. Robyn – Hang With Me (LW – 5, W4): And yet it’s a shame that this one’s still on the brink of extinction. One could interpret this as a metaphor for Robyn’s success in the US market. She comes close to making a big break, but then she fades away before you know it.
  6. Janelle Monae – Cold War (LW – 9, W2): This spunky artist has churned out one of the best and overrated albums of the year. So why aren’t you paying more attention to her? Janelle almost made it onto the top five this week, but it still wasn’t enough. Luckily, we had the opportunity to save her.
  7. Scissor Sisters – Any Which Way (DEBUT): It took a while for their previous single “Fire With Fire” to take off on the countdown, but this one shouldn’t have as much trouble. Most of you were digging this track, and we’d be surprised if it doesn’t stick around for a few more weeks.
  8. Linkin Park – The Catalyst (DEBUT): Of course, this underdog might have a chance, so the other artists on this list should seriously watch their backs. Within a single week, this song debuted at number one on Billboard’s Rock charts. And it’s still holding its place!
  9. Trey Songz f/ Nicki Minaj – Bottoms Up (DEBUT): When all else fails, vote for the song with “bottom” in the title. This may not be our favorite Nicki Minaj collaboration, but at least we’ve got some lady rappers on the countdown. Rest in peace to Anna Nicole Smith. Yes, my dear, you’re so explosive.
  10. Donna Summer – To Paris With Love (DEBUT): While a few of you might argue that Sophie Ellis-Bextor or Of Montreal were more deserving of this final slot, we had to give props to this sixty-one year-old disco diva for merely sticking around for so long.

  1. Do people over 13 really listen to Katy Perry and Adam Lambert? When there’s good music on store shelves? Interesting…

  2. Glad to see Linkin Park making the cut.
    Voted only for them.
Sadly, most gay men don’t appreciate rock music.

  3. Janelle Monae AMAZING and Linking park my favorite. I agree with Nex glad they made it surprised the shit out of me, but really glad they did. I also gladly voted for Robyn she’s a stunner.

  4. I went with Scissor Sisters, Kylie and Katy. They have the summery flavor to their music.

I’d suggest Example’s new single for the Wild Card “Last ones standing”. It’s already making the rounds in the UK and he’s one of the best artists to come out from there in the last year. Warning: He’s not cute, but he’s music is catchy.

  5. JPH… So when does being cute have anything to do with music being good? Being involved in the music biz, I know that image is everything. Maybe that’s what you are referring to. I think it’s sad. Musicians should make it on their talent, NOT their shtick or look. Lady Gaga? Prime example. She can’t sing, yet because of her outlandish persona, she is where she is.

  6. Too bad cute little David Archuleta’s wonderful dance pop song couldn’t stick around. Even though it fell off of this chart, I am still playing it in heavy rotation.

That means that my votes this week were still for Adam Lambert and Katy Perry. Both very fun and catchy songs!

I decided to give my third vote to Kylie just because I’d rather see her on top that Alejandro. Lady Gaga has put out some fantastic music, but this one just doesn’t do it for me as much.

  7. Well the truth is that image has a lot to do with the way pop stars are presented to the public. Although Example is not exactly to die for, I admit he’s very talented. Check other songs by this artist like Kickstarts and Won’t go quietly. One of the reasons I voted for Katy Perry is because of the sexy video and model, but that song also rocks. Kylie also gets my vote because she’s great.

  8. Wait, did you actually mean best and overrated regarding Janelle Monae or was that a gaffe? If it was one of the best of the year then it seems like most of that praise would still be deserved. (Granted yes, not every single track was mind-blowing. Cold War is one of the best but I still really hope the next single is something a bit more out there in terms of style like Wondaland.)

  9. I’m surprised that Linkin Park made it. I’m a big fan of theirs, own all of their albums and even liked the last one. But this song is crap and I’m not voting for it.

I’d be happy seeing Teenage Dream top the charts. Lady GaGa is a million times better than Katy but I still don’t like Alejandro much. Still voting for it though cause I gotta represent and there’s nothing else worth voting for besides Robyn.

  10. I voted for Katy, Kylie and the Scissor Sisters. They have great songs and very sexy videos. So image plays a big part in how to sell a musician these days, especially in pop. Having said that, I don’t think the comment about Example was mean, but the truth is that being this a gay blog, guys want to see hot male singers. Enough of the debate. I recommended Kickstarts by Example a while ago and wasn’t even in the Wild Card. Hopefully this time Last Ones Standing will make the cut. It has very good remixes by Manhattan Clique and Benny Benassi.

  11. For those who don’t want Example or don’t have any other choices for the Wild Card, try the new Alexandra Burke single “Start without you”. Not her best song according to some blogs, but worth giving it a try.

  12. eh Scissor Sisters are painful to my ears.. actually most of the people on this countdown are painful now.. I’m going for Kylie, katy, and adam because they are the least painful to listen to.
