They Re-Made “Steel Magnolias”

Is it because I’m a homo? Or is it just because I’m a sap? If I’m laying around and Steel Magnolias is on the screen vee, I will watch the whole damn movie. And when Sally Field acts her ass off in that soul-destroying funeral scene, I will sob until the front of my caftan is soaked with tears. I’m kidding, I don’t wear a caftan around the house. I’m usually wearing footie pajamas with a cock ring.

Maybe it’s cause we equate ourselves with strong women, or enjoy seasoned bitches throwing shade at each other. Steel Magnolias seems to resonate with a lot of gays. That scene in The Broken Hearts Club when the boys try to figure out which Steel Magnolias’ character each one of them is rang true to me. FYI, I’m totally Shelby, because of my extreme beauty. I drink my juice.

Lifetime and Queen Latifah have shot a remake of the classic 1989 film (which was based on Robert Harling’s play), and the cast is made up of famous actresses of color. Latifah’s taking Sally Field’s role (she better have an acting coach if she’s looking to do justice to that party), and Clair Huxtable (Phylicia Rashad) and Alfre Woodard are playing Clairee and Ousier respectively.

When I first heard about this project, I was like “eh?”. But the trailer doesn’t look half bad. It doesn’t look like an exact remake (thankfully), and Queen might just pull this off. They had better have kept blush & bashful and the bloody armadillo cake.

  1. I have always called Steele Magnolias “The Gay Bible.”   They have just made the gay bible gayer and I can’t wait to see this.

  2. It looks good from the trailer.  I love the classic, but it is a classic now.  Makes me feel old.  But this looks like a worthwhile remake.

  3. I completely agree.    On the plus side, at least it wasn’t remade by Tyler Perry featuring Madea.   Since Queen Latifah recently worked with Dolly Parton, maybe she had Dolly’s blessing.

  4. omg JH, yeah they better have kept the cake… and “track lightin'”. i wonder if we’ll have to wait another 30 years for the multiethnic remake.

  5.  I just hate the fact Hollywood and everyone
else keeps thinking they can do or make a better vs of stuff that is
    already a well liked classic.

Does not matter who they use in it or what changes they make I just think some things should be left alone.

Once in a while they do a good job yes but I hate seeing a classic end
up not being seen anymore or less often  because others think the new one is better. And no offense to anyone but I can see some bitching that the new version is not seen enough because of who is in the movie and call it prejudice. Which this country seems to be so afraid of now a days.

  6. Steel Magnolia is one of my favorite films of all time. It’s
also a wonderful stage play. Since its roots are in the theater I feel fairly
certain an all black cast of this show has already occurred.  I applaud that sort of diversity and color
blind casting on stage and in films. My real issue with this adaptation, and
this is based entirely on the clip provided, is in the casting. There are some
fantastic choices (Alfre Woodard) and some that are not so great. (Watch the
clip you’ll figure it out pretty quick who the weak links are) Maybe I’m being
unfair and comparing this cast with the original, but let’s be honest, it’s
going to happen. I do plan on watching this version and I promise to keep an
open mind about it but, Queen Latifah
(she produced this version) has got bigger balls than most to try to remake
this iconic film and she’s really, REALLY ballsy to cast herself in that particular
role. I’m eager to see how it turns out.

  7. I hope they didnt show the best parts in this trailer….if so, Ill pass, leaves a lot to be desired…I honestly expected to see Latifah as Truvy, and Rashaad as M’lynn…

  8. After watching the trailer I’m not going to condemn it out right since I think it could be interesting.  Is it going to be as good as the original I’ll have to watch and see.

  9. Oh, gawd what a train wreck.   They have turned a tragicomedy into a Lifetime Movie of the Week treatment.   That trailer I’m sorry to say confirmed all my fears about this.   The play and the movie had a tongue in cheek quality to it and raced along until the screeching halt of the sadness that was to come.   This trailer shows none of that…..  Just awful.   I realize that you have to have a different take on it, but they’ve just sucked all the humor and warmth that the original had in abundance …. can Lifetime MAKE  a decent movie????
