The xx: “Angels”

I would say “Angels” is the most accessible song The xx ever recorded if I, in any way, thought The xx were still inaccessible. The trio have been sampled by Rihanna, covered by Shakira and mashed-up with everyone from the Notorious B.I.G. to Adele for dance party-ready remixes.

It’s safe to say that, even if they haven’t officially broken into the American mainstream consciousness, their influence has seeped in to a great extent (and I didn’t even include the sample of Jamie xx‘s Gil Scott Heron remix on Drake & Rihanna‘s “Take Care” or their wildly popular cover of Florence + The Machine‘s “You’ve Got The Love”).

So, um, yeah… The xx are beyond “indie” right now.

“Angels” is the first offering from the band’s upcoming album Coexist, and it might be the prettiest thing I’ve heard this year. Prettier than the birds singing outside! Prettier than the sound of crickets at night! Prettier than the moans of Kodi with a dick inside of him! <– Yes, it’s that pretty.

  1. it is very pretty, but songs like that I still want to feel a point of climax in the song itself.. it just helps the song stick around longer.

  2. Sorry, are you under the impression that “You’ve Got the Love” is a Florence and the Machine original?

  3.  To elaborate, their cover was billed as a “remix” of Florence + The Machine’s version (which is currently more relevant than The Source and Candi Staton’s original version).

  4. It’s so funny that you posted this. I am literally listening to “Island” by them now. Such a great band!!
