The Same Old “Faggot” Dialogue

Ugh.

You may have heard about GLAAD and Jake Shears lashing out at rapper/singer Azealia Banks for calling a certain blogger a “messy faggot”… A certain blogger who previously called someone a “faggot”, then justified it by saying it was “the worst possible thing that thug would ever want to hear” (because, according to him, all black people are apparently thugs).

One blog noted that the outrage against Azealia’s tweets doesn’t measure up to the response to Dan Savage, who used the very same word earlier this year to belittle members of GOProud. Some might argue that it’s all about context, intent and the voice behind the slur. Did Savage have the right to use “faggot” in a derogatory manner because he’s a gay male? Meh, not really.

Azealia, of course, didn’t help her case when she wrote, “A faggot is not a homosexual male. A faggot is any male who acts like a female. There’s a BIG difference.” O RLY!?!? We’ve heard this justification time and time again, and the logic just doesn’t hold up. This school of thought perpetuates the idea that men with feminine qualities are inherently bad or inferior.

It’s bullshit, but hey, she had some other answers.

She apologized to anyone who was indirectly offended by her “foul language”. She pulled the bisexual card. She went on to state that she’s never gotten as much attention for using other slurs, even though kids are bullied and tortured with them too.

At the end of the day, this is all just fucking ridiculous! Azealia’s a mess, GLAAD’s a mess, and we’re all a mess for not being able to care about hate speech until it’s thrown at a tired, washed-up gossip columnist who hasn’t had anything original to say in a zillion years. Hell, I’m a mess for even bothering to write this post, but I guess I just wanted to open up this dialogue for the 987th time on this blog…

Is there ever a “right time” to call someone a “faggot”? Let’s discuss.

  1. But Perez Hilton IS a horrible messy faggot. He is the LAST person that can call somebody on using inappropriate words , since he built his *cough* career on bashing and insulting people. I’m surprised he is still around and I guess this is the only way he can get publicity these days.

And as horrific as it is , he looks even worse now that he is “skinny”. Like a lollipop corpse:|

  2. Perez Hilton has made his millions by slinging sleazy gossip and insulting humor, so he should not be surprised when the same is directed towards him. What goes around, comes around. Perez, you will have to deal with it.

  3. Perez Hilton is literally everything Azealia accused him of. His anti-bullying campaign/trying to be Oprah is the definition of cognitive dissonance.

  4. While I am by no means a Perez Hilton fan, I don’t think it is ever appropriate for anyone to use that word, even those of us in the gay community. If a word is a slur or is derogatory when used by one person then it should be considered as such when used by anyone. I feel the same way about the “N” word. I don’t think it is any more appropriate for African Americans to use it than it is for non African Americans.

  5. i read azealia banks not only called him a fag but told him he should kill him self. Read the whole thing from buzzfeed

  6. I’m a gay man and I NEVER use that word regardless of context! There is no use in perpetuating such negativity.

  7. Hew Dewitt, how come my thoughtful comment was moderated, but all the people calling Perez a faggot weren’t?

  9. I sometimes wish we could go back to the days where the internet was prominent but before social media. Actually no, because it’s helped in places where they were censored by the government. Let’s just censor celebrities or “celebrities” as the case may be, as they obviously never have anything worth being said. There was a time not too long ago where the best Azealia could have hoped for was to be Thomas Jefferson’s house slut.
